Almost compulsory for the base game
All three DLCs (Crucible, Malmouth and Forgotten Gods) add a LOT of content and value to the base game. They are not compulsory, but almost... And that is exactly why I still find Torchlight 2 a better game in general than Grim Dawn.

Stop making desert biomes!
Diablo 2 (be cursed!) started it with the tedious Act II, now every ARPG has to have one. What moron thought it would be a good idea to take the blandest and most boring area and make it the setting for your game? I got this DLC in the package (Definitive Edition) but end up skipping the DLC campaign entirely. It drags on for far too long, enemy variety is bland and repetitive, most of the tougher enemies are bullet sponges.

Unbalances the Game
I had been enjoying playing this game in Hardcore Veteran, so figured I'd pick up the expansions. The expansions add 'Monster Totems' to the game, which spawn over-leveled enemies with skills, abilities, and damage types that are not at all balanced for the areas or character level you find them. Getting frozen to death at lvl 7 with absolutely no recourse whatsoever to survive is poor game balance, and I regret adding this expansion to my game because it's going to have to make me avoid Hardcore mode, changing the way I was playing the game and making it less enjoyable. Jackass move by devs.
