Remember Diablo 2? It's BETTER!

Many have been said about Diablo 2 spiritual successors, but none has grasp that concept better than Grim Dawn. I bought the game back when it was in early access and I simply love it. On the surface it's seems just like another grind-for-gear dungeon crawler, but the more you play the more you'll see the deep layers of complexity you'll have to understand in order to make the best of the game. You have a dual class system that allows for 15 different specialities plus the basic six for one to dig in. After that, we have the devotion system, that adds a whole new layer of complexity to the character development. And on top of that that are 3 difficulty progression levels. Overall, the game deserves a solid 5 stars. p.s. I haven't tried on-line game so I can't comment on that.

BUY THIS NOW! support the small dev team and experience the world of grim dawn. The lore and map design is done buy one of the Diablo 1+2 guys along with guys from Titan Quest. Its amazing, smooth, endless builds to come up with, hard as nails difficulties, endless loots. JUST DO IT!

new multiplayer functionality

If you like Diablo 2 or Titan Quest, this game is the real deal. I just want to throw up a quick review saying that as of the 1.1 patch, a GOG copy of this game, fully updated and patched, can play multiplayer with users on Steam. If you're returning for the new expansion, check out that server list!

As good as Diablo used to be...

... But not better than Titan Quest or Path of Exile, in my opinion. I had some time off work. This was in my GoG library. Installed and threw in 50hrs over 3 days reaching lvl 60 on Elite difficulty. Bought it on Steam as well (base game for £5) so I could help out a friend who had also started playing but was still in the 30s. (Steam also automatically imported my GoG cloud save smoothly). The one down side that stopped me giving this a 5 was the platform dependant Multiplayer mode. Shame on you GoG & Steam. That aside, the bottomline; whatever your favourite ARPG is, you'll probably enjoy this and not regret having spent your cash especially if you get it on sale.

Mixed bag of blessings.

I had a fever, and the cure was something like Diablo 2. I played Diablo 1 when it came out - still got the Prima guide to it. Then I spent countless hours in Diablo 2. Diablo 3 was... underwhelming. So how does Grim Dawn stand out as a Diablo-style ARPG? 1. The presentation The environments are beautiful. The character models and the gear are not. Not jarringly ugly, but Diablo 2's art direction this is not. 2. The sound The sound design is horrible. In Diablo and Diablo 2 you could understand a lot about the world just by listening to it. Each kind of loot made a distinct sound when dropped. Monsters would have unique sounds. In Grim Dawn you can't rely on it. At all. 3. The gameplay It's bad. Like the bastard child of Diablo and World of Warcraft. Bitter, estranged bastard child. Humans and ghosts and undeath only look different - they may also inflict different kinds of damage - but are not as distinct as in BG or even Diablo. The bosses are extremely cheap. Not hard; cheap. After 30 hours here's how the bosses play out: most spawn minions endlessly, some don't. You kite them and once in a while throw a ranged attack or skill at them. Take forever to kill. The loot... isn't worth it. But often are required to progress the game. Too many magical items and rare items and epic items. Too many item effects to realistically manage. Opaque and confusing character progression. At some point in the game there was an acid floor. Did it act as an obstacle in front of a secret? Was it to force the player to find an alternate root? No, it was just there to punish the player for whatever. The developer thought it would be cool to have an acid room. 4. The verdict It's not all bad. Except all the good ideas are carried over from Diablo. Most of the rest... speaks of lack of ability on the developers' part. They seem competent, just not that good at it.
