half-great/half-shitty

I LOVE good rpgs. And I particularly appreciated old bioware/obsidian games. Therefore, as soon as I saw how many people compared this game to the old golden age of roleplay games, I decided to give it a try. My first impressions were very good : nice graphics, a great introduction to the story, character personalization, and everything else you expect to find in a good RPG. So, why is this not a 5/5 ? Why can't I fast travel whenever I want ? (would be okay if this game wasn't mostly running around) Why do every quest imply more running around than actual questing ? Why are the natives a bunch of earth-loving hippies attacked by the evul european-like people (who happen to have an inclusive multi-ethnic society, for some reason) AGAIN ? I mean, it was already over-done when Avatar came out. Most factions are unsufferable clichés anyway. Why, why why why ? Why is this not a 0 then ? Well, as I said, good graphics. good quests with multiple ways to solve the problem. Original setting (XVIIth century fantasy ? Love it !), likable characters, and many other qualities.

Better than expected!

Honestly, after seeing some screenshots, i thought it will be "goofy" with too big weapons, clothing and design overall. Yet the atmoshpere is good, and the setting makes a lot of sense. Maybe it's not enough rpg for some hardcore gamers, (rather witcher style than morrowind for sure), but i got attracted to it. Sometimes there's too much running across the map, but the travel system is ok, and sometimes quests allow you to fast travel instantly anyway.

Klimat i fabuła

Klimat gry, nietypowy setting, i całkiem przyjemna fabuła, z kilkoma zwrotami akcji i ciekawie napisanymi postaciami - to tym Greedfall stoi. Grafika, gdy się włączy wszystkie bajery jest całkiem ładna, ale recykling modeli twarzy i budynków kłuje w oczy. Walka, rozwój postaci, crafting - są mocno średnie. Mniej więcej w połowie gry odblokowałem wszystko dla buildu wojownika i nadmiarowe punkty rozwoju przydzielałem losowo, podobnie z wyposażeniem, które od połowy gry służyło mi aż do końca. Jeśli przymknie się oko na te wszystkie mechaniki i skupi się na odkrywaniu tajemnic nowego lądu, Greedfall daje mnóstwo frajdy.

B- RPG

Decent RPG, has a little too much walking for my preference & no mounts. DLC was bugged for me, a lot of NPCs had missing models (ie hair, or torso or only see there head). Not a great game, but is a good game to pass the time when you have beaten/played most of the AAA games. Wait for a sale, took me about 25 hours casually playing to beat (relaxed pace, doing about half the side quests in game). Has many different methods to play the game & different endings, choices effect heavily on almost every part of the game. Definetly has a lot of replayability (if you have the patience for it)

Okay, but certainly not great

Overall, Greedfall isn't a bad game. But it could have been so much more. The game ticks a lot of boxes of what I like to see in an RPG: a main story with unexpected turns, decisions that influence the overall story and lead to different endings, interesting and varied characters (including companions), diverse side quests, character development, a (mostly) open world to explore, monsters and humans to fight, several competing factions, a crafting system, too name a few. So, why only three stars, then? My answer is that while Greedfall has many features, it's not doing anything in a great way. For example, the main story has many somewhat unexpected turns, but the writers always hint at it 2-5h before, so that when the turn arrives it's not really surprising anymore. All the side quests are written in a way that maximizes the drama in every imaginable way, it's just not credible anymore. Everytime something "unexpected" is going to happen, the background music switches to a "suspense" theme 10-20 seconds before, so (again) the surprise is spoiled. The inventory management is clunky. As a maxed-out mage, I only have 4 different spells/skills (besides the two standard attacks), and no way to deal fire or poison damage (no, there's no "fireball" skill) to use my opponents' weaknesses. The building interiors all have the same room layouts and feel pretty much the same. But, above all, the game lacks atmosphere. To me, the game feels a bit sterile. It got me somewhat hooked to the story, but not to the game itself. The voice-acting is okay, but overall the emotions displayed by the characters remain shallow. "My husband/wife died? Oh, I'm so sad! I'll prepare the burial now." And the game goes on. I was seriously considering not finishing the game. So, in summary: Nothing about the game is done really *badly*, but nothing is done really well, either. It's a shame, I think the game had the potential to be something really amazing with some more polishing.
