Different but good

The first two games are true rough gems with reasonably sized open worlds and a somewhat dark and sarcastic sense of humor. Gothic 3 is NOW a good game, but it is not what the fans expected. The release state was terrible and made the game unplayable - therefore the bad reviews online from that time. The GOG version now includes all the official and unofficial patches and it makes the game well, with minimum amounts of bugs and glitches. But about the game itself. The graphics are solid and even now the world looks ok, though you can see the age of this game. The majority of the quests are just "go there", "kill him", "bring this" with some interesting quests now and then and some very difficult ones without a wiki. The melee combat system is not good and is a dumbed-down version the previous ones and the reason why I give it just 4 stars. It is just bad. The ranged combat is a lot better and it is actually great! The world is now huge. Or was considered huge at the time, still it is probably smaller than something like Skyrim but it is a really impressive world with a lot of caves, dungeons and hidden areas to find and explore. The best loot cannot be just found by some creature or in a specific cave but requires you to find more chests of a specific type (old for mages or heavy for fighters) and with each additional chest you get a noticeably better gear up to the "legendary" items. A solid strength is its over-the-top voice acting. German voice acting is occasionally so bad it is amazing and the English one is just solid (main protagonist voiced by Crispin Freeman [e.g. Itachi Uchiha]). The music is just amazing and the sound design is great, though not perfect. Overall the game offers plenty of fun, a big open world, solid RPG system, great ranged combat and below-average melee combat. Maybe worth it without a sale but totally worth on sale! Also, it has educational value for language learners as it offers plenty of voiced lines in different languages.

Horrible controls

While gothic 1 and 2 were basic games, at least they were functional. Nice basic controls and movement, actions, fighting. Then comes gothic 3. Its controls are laggy, unresponsive, visual glitches, and a ton of other problems. And that is just within the first 10 minutes of playing. Try just running forward. About a few seconds in you veer to the right or left, because the timing of movements seem to be lagging a few seconds, so if you want to turn right, you'll go forward a little, THEN turn right. Exactly when you don't want to turn right. Try fighting the very first battle in the game against some orcs. I was trying to hit stuff, and was just running into a building chopping at the wall, i couldn't even turn around to attack the orc hitting me because the controls were so horrible. I laughed at how bad it was. I played gothic 2 and was amazing, and they throw this dribble out as gothic 3? pathetic. Wanted to quit playing the first hour i tried to get the clunky thing to actually just walk in a straight line.

Favorite games

RPG with the highest degree of freedom in history, seamless map, open world game, I like it very much, very immersive. If you have the patience to play, you will find the real charm of Gothic 3, with many fantastic details. Players from China wish the Gothic Dynasty series more and more excellent, and hope that the Gothic Dynasty 3 can have a reset version.

Could have been so much more

I never played this before the Community Patch, so it must have been a mess when it came out. The graphics are nice, the world is big, there is freedom to roam and lots to explore... The biggest flaw of the game is the story. It is not particularily bad, just...meh. There is far too little going on for a world this big. The fantastic characters of the past two games are also not present here. Even known characters from the last two games are lifeless and generic here. Also, inconsistent and illogical. Whoever thought up the idea that the Water Mages should be nomadic Desert People should have their head examined. The modern mouse control is maybe more modern, but the combat system is far more simplistic now. In Gothic one and two, your combat control skills actually mattered. Here, its just your characters attributes, and a clickfest. Quests are also very generic. I spent hours ridding the Northern lands of Orc armies. Litereally hundreds of orcs in several camps. When talking to the questgiving barbarian chieftain afterwards, he said something like: "Hey, thanks mate" and gave me an armor and some gold. Epic!

Doesn't live up to the great name

All in all Gothic 3 isn't a bad game. It is actually quite enjoyable, once all patches (including the inofficial community patch) are installed. But it just isn't as great as its predecessors and it feels unfinished, even with most of the bugs removed. Too much emptiness, some NPCs seem too generic. One keeps running into situations where one has the impression: "Ah, here the designers had a nice idea - and then ran out of time and didn't implement it fully." Summary: lots of potential wasted. If you're a hardcore Gothic fan ... you probably already have this. But if you are new to Gothic, rather start with 1 and 2. Their graphics may be worse, but they still are far superior games.
