W królestwie Myrtany toczy się wojna. Hordy orków najechały na terytoria ludzi, a król tych ziemi potrzebuje wiele rudy do wykucia broni potrzebnej dla swojej armii w celu odpierania zagrożenia. Ktokolwiek popełni teraz przestępstwo w tych mrocznych czasach, zostaje skazany na odbycie kary w wielkiej kolonii więziennej na Khorinis, wydobywając jakże potrzebną rudę.
Cały ten obszar, nazwany "Kolonią", otoczony jest magiczną barierą w postaci sfery zajmującej dwa kilometry średnicy, która odcina kolonię karną od świata zewnętrznego. Bariera może zostać przekroczona od zewnątrz - jednak ktokolwiek to zrobi, nie może już jej opuścić. Okazała się jednak być mieczem obosiecznym - więźniowie wykorzystali w pewnym momencie stosowne okoliczności i wszczęli bunt. Kolonia podzieliła się na trzy rywalizujące ze sobą frakcje, a król został zmuszony o negocjacji o swoją rudę zamiast jej domagania się.
Ciebie również wrzucono przez barierę do tego więzienia. Ze swoimi plecami przypartymi do ściany musisz przetrwać i zawiązać niepewne sojusze, aż w końcu uciekniesz.

Open ended role play
This is one of those games that either you love... or you just don't get. It's got a very open ended world that allows you to go anywhere and do anything. However, you can quickly lose sight of your main objectives. Some fans consider it more of an alive fantasy environment to interact with than an actual game with a plot. In game characters have lives, history, daily routines, even celebrate certain days of the years with traditional rituals and decorations.

One of the best games ever
Gothic has been part of my life for many, many years. I have played through the games in this series countless times. The first game has an amazing atmosphere and a great story. I love this world and these characters. It is one of the best games I have ever played.

My first and favorite game of all time
This game was really ahead of its times. To this day, the only other games that have come close to give me a world to explore that would satisfy me are the FromSoft games, and mind you, the difficulty isn't that far either.
