Interesting game but deep flaws

I really want to like this game. It's in a genre that could do with some more love, and the designers really went out of their way to innovate, in the setting, in the mechanics, in the way the battles are put together... but it's hard to look past its flaws. The 3D graphics have not aged gracefully and far from making you feel an atmosphere of terror or foreboding, it just makes you wish you could see what the hell is going on. There are serious bugs which have effects ranging from visual glitches on the screen to preventing the game from starting at all on some computers. Worse yet, though, is the fact that the difficulty and the design have been engineered in such a way that many battles can only be "solved" by one specific approach. This means that effectively each of these battles is a "puzzle" which must be tried again and again until you hit on the "correct" way to do it. It's this repetition which ultimately makes the game lose the crucial "fun factor" for me, at least. Nonetheless, if you're really hankering for a game in the mould of Jagged Alliance... well, there aren't many around, and this is one.

Tactical horror game

Oh yes, Gorky 17, game that I compleated well over 10 times and preety much can replay from memory alone. It's a amazing game, tho to truly enjoy it, you have to come from a bit niche audience - someone who loves tacital, squad based games. One thing that is a bit uniqe for this genere, that Gorky have errie, almost horror like atmosphere to it. Especialy for newcomer, moving across the city can be tense as progressing mean that inevetably you will step into an monster ambush. However I need to adress most common complain about this game - difficulty. Is it too hard for modern standards ? Well, yes and no. Game is absouletly beatable for newcomer. If 12-year old potato like me, with literaly zero experience in similar games could finish it in 2000, many years before era of easy acces solution and YT guides, then so can you today. At the same time, there is definietly uneasy learnig curve. Ammunition is limited, monsters are durable and hit hard, some are compleatly invaunrable to certain types of attack ( and unless you already played the game, you have to find that hard way !) and death is instant restart for entire encounter. And the sooner you learn that yes, guns are great, but knife, axe, crowbar and - especialy ! - everything that stuns is you best friend, the better.

Epic Story

Some reviews are kind of strange when I read them :) Gorky 17 is and always will be one of my FAVORITE games. First of all, I never expirenced any bugs or problems with the game, so I think it's very polished. I like the combat system. You have guns but with most, you actually can only shoot in certain way, along lines, not anywhere you want, even if the enemy is close. And... and I suprisingly love this system :) This makes it much more different, tactical and fun for me. It is not really something you think about later, since It doesnt really make the game much harder. I remember I failed my whole first playthrough because I failed to ration ammo. This makes the game very intense, you actually learn to use melee weapons and early on! What is especially fun, is that you can make it easier by giving specific types of weapons only to certain members to conserve ammo. Less weapon switching is also rewarded with XP points, which are very nice addition too. All enemies are very unique and challanging. Riddles are actually not. But are still fun, as the surrounding, although very dark, looks nice and realistic. The whole point of riddles is not to think too much, just to force you to move, and every step taken makes you very tense, as you know that boss encounters happen A LOT :) But above everything else - good graphics, cool weapons, characters personalities and enemies design - STORY is the most interesting part. First playthrough I really really wanted to know what will happen. It was pr-stalker game, so really there was nothing like this before, but I think it will still be incredible If you never played Gorky 17 before :) And the price is a joke, I couldn't recommend the game more! Get it while you can, end of the world may be near! :)

Yep, definitely worth a buy... kind of experience you won't find anywhere. Whant a short review? Chess-type fight-tactics game with beautiful and very detailed graphics. Really try it...I assure you won't regret. And it's not that hard :)

Childhood Ruined

This game ruined my childhood. It was one of the hardest games I've ever played. But I kept going back to it. Over and over again. Ofcourse back then I didn't understand why. I was a snotnose little prick. I knew nothing about atmosphere and the rewarding feeling after beating those tough creatures. Hell, I didn't even speak english back then. This game is a 10 out of 10 for its time. All around. Excellent story, amazing plot twists, turn based combat, a true monster survival atmosphere. Manage your resources, make your shots count. The only real negative is how fights are introduced. Randomly exploring, suddenly battle. There should've been enemies present in the world to indicate there will indeed be a fight there. Sometimes they get away with it, like when a character falls down from a ledge. But most of the time it's extremely immersion breaking. I wish this game would get a reboot. A proper one. Not a watered down one. Just as hard, just as unforgiving.
