Excellent isometric RPG

If you enjoy games like Pillars of Eternity, Divinity Original Sin, Baldurs Gate or any other isometric/CRPG, chances are you'll enjoy this title. Geneforge is super heavy on lore and exploration, the latter being my favorite aspect of the developer's titles ( none which have ever disappointed ) The simplicty of the ambient background sound effects and the way each area map unfolds is just totally engrossing in a way that's difficult to put into words. The combat itself is simpler in comparison to Pillars/Divinity, yet the game is still packed with loving attention to detail and environmental clues that can help influence your decision making. ( ie; You may meet certain individuals who you initially trust but then discover something nearby that changes your perspective. ) I love the wide array of choices that the game presents, the rivalry between the different factions you'll come across, and the subsequent moral and ethical dilemmas presented to the player. In the end, you're free to play and discover things exactly as you want to. The open-ended experience is pretty compelling. For those who have played Avernum--bear in mind that Geneforge doesn't have an "open world" map. It has zones that you travel back forth between. At first I was a little put off by that, but honestly the system in Geneforge is actually way more convenient for quick trips back to friendly towns so your character can rest. When you get gated by enemy difficulty in one zone, it takes no time to just visit another zone and continue exploring. After a 60 hour playthrough I ended up loving the map style in Geneforge. I never leave game reviews on this site, but I felt really compelled to for this title. I hope the developer continues to make these games, they're really unique and definitely satisfy that CRPG urge.

Clasic perfection for the right gamer

I was a poor kid whose parents would faint if any money would dare be spent on somthing as frivolous as a computer game. So I managed to aquire the shareware version of this game which allowed me to play quite a bit of this game free . It blew my young mind. I have now finally bought the full version and frankly I am having a blast. This is so well written and it is so very fun , I'm just sayin ,cant go wrong . Well, maybe you can . If you dont like to read when you play computer games do not get this game . The combat mechanics and story synergize perfectly .

Same old great game with some reshaping

I played and replayed the entire Geneforge series dozens of times, and the first chapter was always my favourite; this remake is a fantastic opportunity to make an old jewel shine once more! If you have never played the original: give it a try, without any doubt! You'll wander an abandoned isle of scientists/magicians as an apprentice, meet out-of-control experiments, be tempted by the dark side, choose between stealth and combat, and position yourself anywhere in the range between zealot and anarchist. If instead you are not new to the shaping arts: enjoy all the greatness of Geneforge I, with some significant differences: 1) Creations now feel more like creations and less like pets. Your cryodrake just died in a tough fight? no problem, with enough essence you can recreate it at exactly the same level. I even stopped giving them names. Your degree of control over the creations also depends on the level you decide at the shaping time. 2) New upgradable artifacts 3) Bonus creation, fun to use, you can make it early on but need to go much later through a tough fight to properly control it 4) Few new inhabitants of your favourite barred island

Great remake of an indie classic

This is a terrific game in a world that is a mashup of fantasy with elements of molecular biology (!!!). You are a Shaper, trained in the ability to create and control other life forms for your use and shipwrecked on an island which has been banned by your kind for a century. You discover that the island is populated by creatures that normally would only exist as created by Shapers, but seemingly without any Shapers. How this came to be and what to do about it, well that is the story that you will resolve. And you have great freedom to resolve the story how you like, by joining factions or not, alone or with creations, violently or as a pacifist. And while your choices do influence how the game progresses, there are few choices until near the end that are completely irreversible. So the game has a lot of replay value and a range of endings, from terrible to some pretty good ones, both for yourself and the various factions. The game is a remake of Geneforge I from the Geneforge Saga. So why buy this one or play it if you played the original? Other than to support a great indie developer, there is quite a bit of new content, including an interesting new creation and quest plotlines. The graphics, sounds and engine have been updated to work better on modern computers, and there are the usual QoL improvements one might expect. The best improvements though are in how the game mechanics work to make the game more approachable and less punishing to unfortunate early decisions in your build. Also, the creations are much more customizable and completely rebuildable. This leads to fun possibilities, like exploding creations you send on suicide missions, or creation builds custom-designed to navigate specific zones or to defeat specific bosses. This is a worthy remake of one of his best games. Highly recommended!

My gateway drug into Spiderweb Software

The story in this game has to be one of the most engaging stories I've ever played in a video game. The setup, the plot progression, the characters, the setting, all of it's pretty excellent. There's a lot of care given to fleshing out the three factions and making them all feel believable. I'd put it up there with like, Fallout 1, Chrono Trigger and Halo 2 in the story department. I really dig the science-fantasy setting, and I appreciate that it poses actual moral questions like good scifi is supposed to do. The gameplay is pretty cool too. It's essentially a squad based strategy/tactical rpg but instead of gaining party members along your adventure, you summon them. Pretty neat if you ask me. I did not love some of the dungeons, I found the traps to be real annoying. Most of the truly annoying sections are optional, mind you, but you kind of don't know that your first time around. Kinda bogged the later half of the game down a bit for me, which is unfortunate because that's when the story's at its most engaging. Luckily, the story kept me going. It was worth it too, I got one of the "bad" endings and was still completely satisfied that the story ended with me causing the world to plunge into chaos even though that's literally what I didn't want. I definitely recommend people try this. Genuinely one of the most unique and engaging RPG experiences I've played. In a world of 2-star games that cost a bajillion dollars that nobody wanted to make, give this a shot. Hell, I actually finished it, so that sure counts for something.
