Galaxy squad is turn-based tactical roguelike, in which you are leading a squad of mercenaries through randomly generated galaxy with different events.

The game combines node-based exploration with random events, similar to games like FTL or Renowned Explorers, with hardcore tactical battles, inspired by XCOM series. All your characters are randomly generated, and you can evolve them however you want, creating ultimate crew.

Good for its price

In comparison to X-Com tactical part in GalaxySquad is simpler: the game does offer few different mission types (kill all; rescue civilians; etc.) but the layout of a battlefield is (procedurally generated) very basic (nothing like going to buildings or multi-level spaceship) which limits the games replayability and it is probably my biggest complaint. Another comparison: soldiers have skills but they use a resource (energy) to use it rather than a cooldown. Soldier level progress is not as deep as in X-Com (at max level 10 your soldier has all skills for his/her class). Strategy part felt a little bit richer: enough different items/weapons (probable the most polished part), pick different ship type (="base") and customize it. On the other hand, some ship designs are much better then others and most of the ship modules do not have any significant impact on the game. I have finished the game on all difficulties and for all story choices. It is relatively short (apr. 7h per walkthrough). When playing it I fell in love with the graphics. I also encountered several bugs but the developer was very helpful and responsive. Thumbs up. Overall, I have enjoyed it but after finishing all 4 story choices the game lost most of the replay value for me (and I have returned to OpenXCom). Word of warning: the game does not explain lots of things. There is also no "load" button (you can only restart current mission is you have not picked ironman mode). I suggest starting the game with low difficulty (and go higher for the next playthrough).

Okay game with great potential.

Pros: Simple controls Nice customization Pretty good variety of settings and difficulty choices beyond easy/normal/hard. Cons: My characters and all the other characters in the world don't feel alive. Everyone feels extremely hollow and fake. There is no individual option to turn off bloom. Post processing is just one setting. Complex or Simple. Complex looks better but has awful bloom. Simple removes the awful bloom but all the colors are drained out and sad looking. The game doesn't seem to care if I have permadeath enabled or not, and seems to treat it as if it's always on no matter what. Even if you turn your computer off without exiting the game, or exit the game without saving, the game still somehow saves exactly where you were so that you can't undo a mistake you made. Essentially there are no "save games" other than continuing if I said that correctly. Give me 100% freedom, because 50% freedom feels wrong, like no freedom at all. It's extremely east to lose crew members. Once you lose even only one, you're basically doomed, because even in a desperate attempt to rush to a station and pick up some random mercenary to join your team, you just get shot down on another planet along the way (AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and get overwhelmed. In conclusion, I highly recommend playing this on easy. I really respect that easy actually does mean easy in this game, unlike other games where even easy is insanely difficult. I don't appreciate how playing on easy earns you less glory points (you need them to unlock all the cool parts of the game) Why punish me even more for playing on the difficulty I can handle? It was incredibly frustrating and tedious having to play what felt like way too many games just to unlock every special thing in the game, and to be honest, by the time I unlocked all those special features, I was already sick of the game and never wanted to play it ever again. I do recommend this game, but maybe wait until it gets some well needed updates.

A Small Unit Tactics Rogue-like

Its a Rogue like game. Think FTL meets XCom meets Jagged Alliance. But with the emphasis on it being Rogue like. The storyline is there just to hold things together, not to excite you with prose. You will need to play it multiple times, not for the story but to open up more variants and stuff to use. Each run could take you an hour or so depending on how much you micro-manage. The nuts and bolts of the game itself is very simple. You have a ship and you go from node to node to do stuff. All the combat is ground. No ship vs ship. The ground combat is elegant enough that you need to think before you blindly charge in but doesnt bog you down with details. Turn based. 2 action points a merc. You can move and shoot or use special abilities. Abilites are powered by a resource which builds ups as you shoot or take damage. Multiple classes of Mercs. You start with 3 types but you can open up another 3 more as you play. Different classes have different abilites which you can pick as you level up. You have a decent paper doll for your Mercs. 2 weapon slots, 2 armour slots and 4 other equipment slots. Gives a fair bit of customisation. Your ship also has equipment slots which you can mess around with depending on the ship and your play style. Plus, you can also customise your Mercs avatars too. Head, body, voice, colours, etc. Its not a great range, and frankly they all look like runaways from the Lego Movie, but its a nice touch. After you finish a run, depending on how you did you get Points which you then use to unlock more stuff for the future. Which I thought was pretty simple and effective. All in all, after mutiple hours into the game, I felt more than happy with the game. Its a Roguelike, which I like. Its turn based, which I love. And its got enough micromanagement that I can use the strategy muscles that have athropied from all the clickfest games out there.

Lacklustre turn based combat.

I bought it on steam a few months ago. The "xcom" styled combat felt too flimsy / casual and overall the game was very badly optimised (a common issue with "low poly" game visuals it seems). At no point did I feel compelled to travel one more node, and at no point did anything in the game excite me.

A whole lot of fun.

I am giving 5 stars not because the game is perfect, just because I'm having so much fun with it. There is room for improvement, but I played the campaign through twice and am happily starting a third run through. The first time through I followed the good path and the second I stayed on the dark path. The endings were dramatically different. There are a couple more story line choices to try out and we'll see if there are other endings. Then I'll give free mode or conquest mode a shot.
