As a pilot for the Galactic Terran Alliance (GTA) you are no stranger to war. But when racing through space to engage your new enemy for the first time, you sense something different. Suddenly, darkness blankets your craft. Your stomach sinks as your eyes pan across the Shivan flagship's massive body. Then it begins. Swarms of fighters pour from the belly of the flagship and scream towards you. You are about to discover everything you thought you knew about space combat just changed.

This game should by all the graces of the gaming gods be a perfect five. My hands should burn off for marking it as less then five BUT there is one reason I cannot rate it as it should rightfully be. GOG or someone messed up the later gen windows conversions and we do not have Joystick support and yet some how the Mac version does. This is a travesty of justice against one of the greatest pc games of all time IMHO. Please GOG, or who ever has the power, fix this.
As a child I loved the game Colony Wars, and I spent years looking for another space sim that could match those memories. The Freespace series has certainly proven to be one of the best experiences I could ask for in this genre, and is indeed a Good Old Game.
But even a top notch game like this has flaws, and the most glaring one is in its controls. The game is playable with a keyboard and mouse, but there are times when one needs to dogfight hordes of enemy fighters and a mouse just can't cut it. The game recommends a joystick and that should be taken as a warning. If you don't have a joystick, then be warned. The game will still be immersive, it will still be one of the best games ever, but you will die painfully in certain heartless missions.
Admittedly the second game had less problems with plot, for at times I felt that this game would just arbitrarily throw more and more powerful enemies at you just for kicks, but even with its cliches the game managed to seize you with its immersive storyline and setting. You are a cog in a great machine, and even if you die it's likely that some other great GTA pilot will save the day.
If you do have a joystick, then it is criminal for you not to buy this game! If you don't have a joystick, you should still get this game. This is one of the brightest gems of GOG's catalogue by far! The only game that tops this one is its sequel, hands down, but playing this one will certainly help you in the long run for the sequel.
The game itself deserves 5 stars for sure. The MAC port, however, has some flaws:
1. The game runs in bad screen aspect ration. I don't know how it works on a laptop, but I had to correct aspect ratio on my external display every time I launched the game. I found no setting to correct it the software way.
2. Some models, especially ones for big ships, get messed up. Some textures blink for no apparent reason. Happened ti me in about 7-10 missions in the game.
3. At some point the game stopped starting up. I had to re-download and re-install it. Luckily my player profile was unharmed.
Apart from that, the game is perfectly playable and You can enjoy it as much as You did in the 90s. ;)
This was my first "space game" and I loved it. I still have the CD floating around somewhere. It blew me away when I was younger taking my tiny fighter against massive capital ships. I never ended up beating it I remember getting stuck on a mission where I had to sneak into an enemy base and well I am not good at sneaking. I do remember that the game can get difficult at times but it is a must play for any space flying fan.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
