The Forgotten Realm Archives - Collection Two brings a healthy mix of “Gold Box” and nostalgia goodness to your PC, along with a combination of adventure builders, turn-based and real-time role-playing gameplay. Composed of RPG classics that premiered the Forgotten Realms to video gamers, The Forgotten Realm Archives - Collection Two contains the following titles: Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Hillsfar, Secret of the Silver Blades, Pools of Darkness, Gateway to the Savage Frontier, Treasures of the Savage Frontier, Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures.

Pool of Radiance Located on the northern shore of the Moonsea, the fabled city of Phlan has been overrun by monsters led by a mysterious leader. Your quest: uncover the identity of this evil force and rid Phlan of its scourge, restoring the city to its former glory. Along the way, you hope to find the legendary Pool of Radiance, said to glow with its own mystical power. Does it really give tremendous strength to the warrior who bathes in its magic waters? Or is that just an elfin myth? Before you meet the challenges ahead, you must create your characters and choose their races and battle skills. Then, set off on your glorious quest to drive out the monsters and let civilization reign once more! Curse of the Azure Bonds After you saved the entire city of Phlan and located the Pool of Radiance, a simple trip to Tilverton should have been as easy as a noon-day stroll. But it wasn’t… Ambushed, captured and knocked unconscious, you awake with no idea who attacked you or how you arrived in Tilverton. You only know that five azure-blue symbols are imprinted under the skin of your right arm. The mystical power of the azure symbols ensnares your will like metal bonds! And when the bonds glow, you must do as they command, No magic can dispel them, no prayers can remove them. Your only hope: search the world for members of the alliance who created the bonds and regain control of your own destiny. Only then can you be free of the Curse of the Azure Bonds. Hillsfar Every visit to Hillsfar is a different, exhilarating experience. Explore the city, meet its colorful denizens on the streets or in pubs and discover a quest. Your quest will keep you constantly on the move. Fight in the arena against raging minotaurs, ill-tempered orcs or insulted swordsmen. Enter different buildings and utilize your maze-running and lock-picking skills. Archery and equestrian events may also be part of your overall quest. Think and move fast - these mini-games happen in real-time. For adventure, there is no place like Hillsfar. Secret of the Silver Blades The frigid valleys of the Dragonspine Mountains echo with the desperate plea of terrified miners: "Heroes of the Forgotten Realms, save us from evil!" Unwittingly digging in unhallowed ground, they have disturbed an ancient vault and released its terrible content. Scores of horrific creatures now infest the mine shaft -- and threaten to escape into the world above! You and your heroes must find the way to contain this scourge. All hope depends upon your ability to unravel the age-old mysteries surrounding this vile infestation. Pools of Darkness The Final Challenge. The Ultimate Enemy. First there was Pool of Radiance. Next came Curse of the Azure Bonds. Then followed Secret of the Silver Blades. Now, the epic has come full circle - Pools of Darkness takes you back to the Moonsea region for the final battle against the ultimate enemy. Prepare yourself for the biggest adventure yet as you are propelled into alternate dimensions on an enormous quest. Great game for its time

If you were introduced to RPGs with Skyrim and the Witcher 3 then you'll likely not appreciate these games. To be honest, I'll never play these games again, but for their time they were amazing. Graphics based PC games were in their infancy with 8bit color and sound. RPGs before these were text based games like Zork where everything was left up to the imagination. These games were considered amazing when first published because they actually had graphics. What a novelty! Each new game incrementally improved as PC software and hardware improved. More colors were being used, still frame graphics were replaced with graphics simulating movement, computer speaker sounds were replaced with music and voice acting accompaniment. The old games were left in the dust. I remember thinking early on, if gaming programmers ever figure out how to let the character control a sword on screen it would be amazing. When we got there I remember thinking, if only they could make games look more like movies. Cut scenes filled the gap for a while, then we got games like Oblivion, Skyrim, and the Witcher series. It's amazing how far we've come since the 1980s in computer gaming. One can only wonder where games will go from here.

Great Deal lots of classics

This is a great start for any Classic RPG Computer game collection. The price is right and the games are great. (Except I never liked Hillsfar, and I bought but did not try the Unlimited Adventures program). The rest of the games are very good. Pools of Radiance started the series. The combat system is very functional and adds to the game. This is part of what was know as the "SSI Gold Box Games". I love this series.

Products of their time

THE GOOD: - a lot of depth role-playing wise, more than games like EYE OF THE BEHOLDER would allow - tactical turn-based combat - good stories (mostly) and background info in adventurer's journal which is very reminiscent of the pen and paper games - GOG included the manuals, cluebooks, adventurer's journals and the copy protection code wheels (the game's copy protection is "hacked" though, so it's no needed) - includes the UNLIMITED ADVENTURES construction set THE BAD: - products of their time with 80s/early 90s graphics and what passes as sound (using PC built in speakers) - earlier games feature horrible EGA graphics only, limiting colors to 16 - varying quality in the games, the worst being HILLSFAR - not all Gold Box games included - controls are keyboard based, with only later games supporting mouse at all BOTTOM LINE: enjoyable if you you can overlook the technical limitations (graphics, sound and controls). These games allowed for more options and possibilites than Eye of the Beholder or Ravenloft and featured (for the time) very good turn-based combat. There's a lot of reading, there's a lot of combat and inventory management is a real chore. It also uses 1st Edition Dungeon and Dragons rules, which I personally don't care for (non-humans are severely level-capped). Personally I can't sit through these anymore, but if you grew up with these (I didn't) you will probably love the trip down Memory Lane.

One of the best RPG series of all time

Despite its age, atrocious interface, nearly non-existent sound and complete lack of userfriendliness, this may well be one of the best attempts at actually adapting tabletop roleplaying to a computer game. Assemble a party of characters, engage in tense (and often highly challenging) battles against a vast array of enemies, use a mixture of magical weapons, spells and tactics to persevere in a game that absolutely does not pull any punches against you. Players accustomed to modern action "rpgs" will find that they need to adapt and learn to proceed cautiously and with attention to win. This is a series that will reward your dedication and time, but the learning curve is steep and the interface and difficulty can be very alienating.

Finally got to play these games!

A big D&D fan here, playing 5e the last 2 years. Waited for this to go on 80% off sale and grabbed it. I was a kid when these games were new, but never got the chance to play any of them. I like the charm of the old artwork. One reviewer was helpful pointing out the progression of the games, and after an hour or 2 of playing, I'm interested in playing further. The journal entries and manual text spur the imagination and are full of depth. The simplicity of the graphics just lets you visualize the world on your own terms. I decided to start by playing Gateway to the Savage Frontier (first of a two-parter--its sequel is Treasures of the Savage Frontier). FUN TIP: Find "DOSBox Configuration" and run the game at 1024x768. This allows you to have the manual+journal, a music player (game has no music), and other windows up at the same time. I decided to search up artwork to represent my characters, so now I have this art placed in the space to the side of the game window. This added a lot of fun, for me. INSERT DISK INTO DRIVE C PROMPT BUG: I discovered if you save your game during the character creation screen, you will get a prompt to insert a disk when you try to load it (which you can't do). Make sure you don't save in the character creation screen. But if you do, I found a workaround. I ran the game again and made a second save that had the same number of characters as my slot A save, but in slot B. Then I found the folder with the saves in it, and renamed all the A slot character files with the letter B. This was worth the effort for me because I spent a good amount of time creating my characters and customizing their icons.
