Curse of the Azure Bonds

Ambushed, captured and knocked unconscious, you awake with no idea who attacked you or how you arrived in Tilverton. You only know that five azure-blue symbols are imprinted under the skin of your right arm. The mystical power of the azure symbols ensnares your will like metal bonds! Hillsfar
Every visit to Hillsfar is a different, exhilarating experience. Explore the city, meet its colorful denizens on the streets or in pubs and discover a quest. Your quest will keep you constantly on the move. Fight in the arena against raging minotaurs, ill-tempered orcs or insulted swordsmen. Enter different buildings and utilize your maze-running and lock-picking skills. Archery and equestrian events may also be part of your overall quest. Finally! Good job, GoG!
The Gold Box series is an iconic translation of classic pen-and-paper Dungeons & Dragons. Certainly, pixelated, turn based combat may not be everyone's cup of tea, but for fans, this is a welcome addition- and a long time coming. The whole bundle for $9.99? Awesome!

We asked and GOG delivered!
I remember playing these with my dad and I've wanted to play them again for so long! I think there were around 5 seperate requests on the forums for the SSI Gold Box series. Bad reviews ignore history.
So, let’s get this out of the way up front. These games were written in the 80’s when a computer with 128K of memory was considered a large amount. Most were written to fit in 64K of RAM. Also, these games had to fit on low density floppy disks. Anyone who complains about music or graphics has no idea how to review a classic game given the constraints of the technology. I’ve also seen complaints about the amount of game text put in the manual instead of the game. They have become spoiled by the largesse of current tech. I’ve also seen poor reviews because of gameplay difficulty. Again, they have no idea about AD&D. These games hewed as closely to the AD&D rules as possible as the tech allowed. Fighting was deadly in AD&D. Dwarves and Elves were level limited. Spells can hit allies as well as enemies. A group of 20 low level mooks *should* be a major threat even to a higher level party. These are features, not bugs, of the gameplay. The game mechanical detail is amazing given what programmers had to work with. That said, the games have a lot of combat grind. Memorizing spells during rests is a chore. The games requires a fairly significant time investment to complete. This was a feature at the time, but challenging today. Game design has come a long way in 30 years. I would recommend this only for the hardcore AD&D nerd who understands the limits of the technology of 1988, or for someone who loves retro gaming. It’s definitely worth a look when it goes on sale.

Gold for its time but....
The Gold Box games were legends and really content rich at the time of the release. They inspired and spawned many CRPG after that and who knows if we ever got Baldurs Gate without these games. But time wasn't gentle to the Gold Box games. There are some feature that remain nice even today, but mostly they are not so enjoyable anymore. On the plus side is: great pixel art graphics, good D&D atmosphere, nice storylines, tactical and challenging round based combat, quit long with many places from the Forgotten Realms to explore. On the dark side of the game are: extremly clunky controls(first one was released 1988), story is mainly in the manual because of memory restrictions back in the time and copy protection, difficulty is very imbalanced and can be very unforgiving and the 2nd edition ruleset of the D&D rules is ab bit unflexible. The Gold Box games still have their charm and can be interesting to play if you love D&D, the Forgotten Realms and good old dungeon crawling especielly if you can oversee the abysmal controls of the games. But if you are no special D&D fan and never played this games, they are much better classic rpg's on gog for you.

Beware the Pool of Radiance Final Boss
So I love these games, and I originally thought I had defeated the big bad guy at the end of Pool of Radiance. But the ending didn't seem to happen, didn't feel right. Meh, it was a ton of fun, so whatever. Years later, with the assistance of the clue book, I realized I missed a key detail. That's all I'm going to say to avoid a spoiler here. Well, that plus this series is what turned me into a hard core gamer. Pool of Radiance is my game zero and I strongly recommend the whole gold box series. Besides, I bet it's more fun now that you don't have to use 5.25" floppy disks!
