Centuries ago, a brutal beast of destruction rent the world asunder. In this time of need, the first Immortals came into their uncanny powers, powers so great that they succeeded in destroying the beast ravaging the land, where all else had failed.

To prevent such destruction from ever happening again, the Immortals banded together to form a Council that would enforce order and stability on a global scale, stepping in at any hint of war or chaos.

The Immortals might be vastly powerful, but they are few. Even they can't oversee all of the lands. This is why they rely upon their mortal agents, the Arbiters, to guard the land's people from the more day-to-day dangers they face. Arbiters range over the land, rooting out bandits, unruly monsters, and crooked officials; their word is law.

But one Arbiter uncovers the deepening corruption pervading her own order, and it falls to her to halt the spread of a threat as dire as the brutal beast of yore.

Strongly influenced by games such as Final Fantasy Tactics (original and Advance versions) and Tactics Ogre, this tactical RPG stands on its own as a worthy successor of those classics, bringing a slew of improvements and additions to the tactics genre.

A worthy spiritual successor

FFT (1998) casts a long shadow. Far too many later games of this genre especially the Nippon Ichi ones are way too reliant on stats, where you can simply overlevel the enemy and then have your mage facetank melee enemies and punch them to death. I hate when strategy gets thrown out simply because you have a bigger numerical dong. I'm glad to report this game manages to (mostly) avoid this. While you can still powergrind, the per-level gap is smaller so you'd have to grind a ton. It's way faster, more efficient, and FUN, to play intelligently. This game also avoids FFT's mistake of making debuffs be impossible to stick, whereas here the early classes can debuff at >70%, making them far more reliable. You'll still want to put down a dangerous caster quickly but at least you have a fair shot at shutting them up instead of eating fireballs the whole time. While FFT still takes the cake with variety, it's nothing to sneeze at here either. It's not as easy to break the game though, so while most builds are viable you won't duplicate FFT's crazy combinations like Calculating all enemies into frogs in turn 1. The game has a decidedly more grounded direction, you'll need to think for your victories and not rely on overpowered gimmicks. The story is decent but if you don't click with the characters it can get dull as it follows them closely. I want to learn more about the game world but sadly lore is sparse - though understandable as this isn't AAA and they didn't have the resources to flesh it out more. One major con (for ME) is there's no gear stealing (lol). I love stealing shit. You can't do that here :( This was confirmed to be a deliberate design choice. Ah well. There's secrets though, and many treasures can only be reached with the appropriate movement ability, giving you reason to revisit maps. There's also some crafting and it's handled well, not too much busywork. All in all worth the asking price, definitely recommended.

FFTA with spice

This game is great, smooth graphics, entertaining gameplay, solid story and a surprisingly pleasant soundtrack. The class system is compelling, especially if you suffer the collectors itch. The fixed camera can take some getting used to but the developers managed to use it creativley to their advantage. Overall this is a must have for any fan of FFTA or Disgaea (although not as comical as the later) and a solid adittion to any turn-based rpg tactics fans library.

Good, but also can get on your nerves.

Overall they did a pretty good job with this game, very much a cheap clone of Final Fantasy Tactics. Not as good though. The thing with this game is the status effects are just too many and too often to the point where it just gets on your nerves. Graphics- Artwork is just enough to pass, animation uses very few frames on the spells and attacks, and doesn't give you much of a feeling of impact. Music- surprisingly good, although they need more tracks, you hear the same music a bit too often. Game play- Is well done and feels very much like FF Tactics. BUT as I said above, way to many attacks cause status effects, instead of so many attacks using status effects they need to use other ways to diversify the attacks to make them more unique. Also some classes really don't feel that unique and use many of the same recycled attacks as other classes. Weapon types really don't feel different enough either, although this is fairly minor. Side note you can not rotate the map, this rarely causes a problem, but here and there it can.

Mouse and keyboard unfriendly

I don´t want to be too harsh but the UI and camera controls are horrible with a mouse and a keyboard, this game seems like it was created mainly with controllers in mind, very unintuitive and sluggish. So if you play mainly with a keyboard and mouse I would suggest avoiding this title. I admit I pretty much stopped playing after a couple of hours so I can give very little feedback on the story and late game mechanics.

Acceptable, but unbalanced

Fell Seal has good visuals, music, and characters. It gets a lot of things right and could make for a pleasant, fun gaming experience. But this depends on two factors: either a lowered difficulty setting or certain advantageous character classes. If you want to play the game on "veteran" difficulty or above, expect to be forced to play it a specific way. The game is strangely unbalanced. When trying to grind for experience, conquered levels you re-enter to patrol are often much harder than the main levels, forcing you to waste time finding cheap ways to jack up experience. The game throws a massive slew of spells at your characters, anything and everything done to weaken them. Silly class combinations mean every enemy has god-like powers. And your own attempts to weaken the opposition are fruitless, as your opponents heal any bad status effects instantly. Dead enemies are brought back to life, sometimes multiple times, at later levels. I jacked up my characters to deal with the main quest more easily, and was cruising along as I should have been, but then I did a side quest and found it pretty much unbeatable. I reduced the difficulty setting to "casual" and still barely prevailed (yes, with jacked up characters). That's unbalanced and ugly level design. Not to mention, there are one-hit kills that can be used against you and WILL be used against you, causing you die by falling into water (huh?) So why is the game acceptable? Because you can adjust these settings to make the experience more reasonable, and because the main quest is often easier than grinding on the conquered levels. My feeling is the developers lost touch with the balance of the game, and overcompensated with silly, overblown enemy tactics for fear it would be too easy. This is a lazy, amateurish move that definitely weakens the overall product. But still, the game is worth buying if one understands its flaws and works around them, and it should make a fine addition one's strategy game library.
