Did you ever want to reroute power to the shields, set phasers to stun,
or even eject the warp core? Well, now you can! In FTL, you experience the
atmosphere of running a spaceship trying to save the galaxy. It's a
dangerous mission, with every encounter presenting a unique challenge with
multiple solutions. What will you do if a heavy missile barrage shuts down
your shields? Reroute all power to the engines in an attempt to escape,
power up additional weapons to blow your enemy out of the sky, or take the
fight to them with a boarding party? This "spaceship simulation
roguelike-like" allows you to take your ship and crew on an adventure
through a randomly generated galaxy filled with glory and bitter defeat.
FTL's complex strategic gameplay allows you to give orders to your crew,
manage ship power distribution, and choose weapon targets in the heat of
battle. You will encounter unique alien lifeforms and technology. You can
upgrade your ship and unlock new ones with the help of six diverse alien
races. Be the Captain you want: hundreds of text based encounters will
force you to make tough decisions. In the randomized galaxy each
play-through will feature different enemies, events, and results to your
decisions. Each time you play another challenging session of FTL:Faster Than Light, it won't be quite the same.
Unlimited adventures in the vast depths of unpredictable space.
A new randomized galaxy to explore each time you start a new game.
Quick play sessions (from 5 to about 90 minutes) will allow you to add that spaceship commander feeling to any of your days.
One of my favorites.
So small - so simple - but entertaning.
I played it through around dozen times in a row without letting it go when I first tried.
Only wish they had a different campaigns for different end bosses.
Also very magical soundtrack; way to go Ben!
As a person who likes sci-fi, rpg and strategy this game is right down my alley. It is all that plus this roguelike thing I've heard so much about but never tried before. - I find it really entertaining!
This game is right up in my top 5 games ever made. The gameplay is brilliant and with the advanced edition adds even greater depth.
The music is really awesome and suits the game well. It's mostly ambient-ish until you're in danger, then percussion is cross-faded into the background music. So when you hear those hi-hats, put your left hand on the numberic keys (weapon shortcuts!).
I imagine this will be one of those games I will keep coming back to every few months for a hearty replay for the rest of my life - really worth the cash! Especially when you consider the fact that it can be expanded and changed. I recently downloaded an expansion that changes all the ships and missions into the Star Trek universe. Can't wait to try that one out!
P.s.
For those who like this game and are looking for others, I recommend Escape Velocity: NOVA or EV: Nova for short. It's an expandable, single-player space rpg that's been around for about fifteen years and still packs a punch.
Everyone says this game is hard, and they're right. However, I had the most fun experience playing this on easy, this game is epic and it was designed to be played on normal or hard. My point is, even if you're rubbish at strategy or roguelikes, easy difficulty will still give you the same amount of satisfaction if not more than normal or hard. In short, this game is worth the money, whatever you're usual style of games are.
I love stories in all their formats, not just books. Give me a good film and I'll be lost for two hours. Give me a good computer game and I can be lost for far longer. For that reason I sometimes avoid games that I know I'll love, particularly perma-death roguelikes. I recently gave in and tried FTL (Faster Than Light). It is a big mistake for productivity! It is one of those "Just one more game!" specials, because when you die you always feel you can do better, that it won't take long to play one more game, and suddenly you are lost again, being the captain of a small space ship on a tense race against time.
Too many words to paste into GOG's review, so the rest is in my blog at http://karldrinkwater.blogspot.com/2014/09/ftl-faster-than-light.html
Retro games on Kickstarter are very popular these days, but FTL is the best proof that"old-school" or "retro" does not have to be automatically bad if the developers know what it takes to make a good game. FTL turns out to be a very challenging and complex "Roguelike" game; despite its simple UI.
Also, the Advanced Edition shows that Subset Games knows how to keep their fans happy: The new elements blend brilliantly in the game. As FTL-pilot you get more variety, more gameplay depth, more fun - and the best is: the expansion is for free!
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
