Flawed but the best of the series
The desperate atmosphere, difficulty (if you dare to set it to maximum) are what make this an experience to remember. AI react to your strategies like using the impressive fire physics, which open up out-maneuvering strategies rarely done well in the FPS genre since F.E.A.R. Health management is done well, regenerating from small hits but will lose permanent blocks from sustained damage. At the last health bar you need to prevent yourself from bleeding out, which in clutch situations can mean life or death. You may very well be risking a fatal shot while bleeding out just to take out the last hostile just so you can heal in peace. Each bleed-out-prevention animation is unique to the last damage type you received, making it very immersive. The main cons are the respawning roadblocks, malaria shots that disrupt proper gameplay and most of the quests being uninteresting or frustrating. Driving is hit/miss. It's easy to control but the environments can feel like a choir to travel after enough time. Has literally the best and most immersive map feature of any game I've played. It's rendered fully in-game, real-time and is used organically with 1st person perspective, changing your view to what's in front of you, the road, GPS and tracking device. You can feel like an off-road racer, knocking around your vehicle with a map, but then turn into James Bond at the first sight of trouble. This is the only Far Cry game I recommend without hesitation because although it's far from perfect, it delivers something unique and unforgettable for me... something that doesn't come easily for this exhausted genre.
