Far Cry® 2, developed by Ubisoft Montreal, takes many of the great ideas from the previous game and improves upon them, making a pulse-pounding, high-speed shooter that roars through the beautiful, if sere, environments of Central Africa. With stunning visuals and deep gameplay, this game takes everything you liked about Far Cry® and ramps it up to 11.
You are a gun for hire, trapped in a war-torn African state, stricken with malaria and forced to make deals with corrupt warlords on both sides of the conflict in order to do what it takes to take down the Jackal, a dirty arms merchant who has made your new homeland a war-torn hell.
You must identify and exploit your enemies’ weaknesses, neutralizing their superior numbers and firepower with surprise, subversion, cunning, and of course, brute force.
This is the Fortune's Edition of Far Cry® 2, which is patched up (like every GOG game) to the most recent version which includes the Fortunes Pack DLC that added three new weapons and two new vehicles to the game, as well as several new multiplayer maps.
One of the most interactive and destructible environments ever made for an open world game, with special attention paid to a realistic fire engine that's a pyromaniac's dream come true.
Fight for different rival factions as you confront the ugly truths about conflict in a poor, war-torn country.
Great story complemented by fantastic open world first-person gameplay!
Firefights fell like you were fighting some robocops. Enemies can survive half a magazine shoots from an assault rifle and be alive. Additionally they are incredibly dump, even nowhere nearby Half-Life's.
There's no fun playing it.
Far Cry 2 is a wonderful experience. Its sandbox environment, the settings and the many skirmishes you can get into are all highly invigorating. The freedom of movement was unparalleled for the time Far Cry 2 came out, and even now, it's among the most flexible. The only thing I have against the game is the shallow narrative. What could be a highly entertaining story, is let down by very mission specific dialogues, action only sequences and a lack of character development.
The people encountered could take part in many events throughout the landscape, but they are very basic in their behavior and views. Hints of personality show through at times, but not enough to make them truly compelling.
Having said that, the gameplay is top notch. There is a huge variety of weapons to unlock as the game progresses and the driving sessions can feel like luxury cruises. Just getting to take a car and see the fields, mountains, streams, waterfalls and local animals is a treat. Pity no monkeys or felines are around, though.
After this they're still good but increasingly unrealistic and arcadey.
But this is only the best when you also install Dylan's Far Cry 2 Realism Mod.

This balances the weapons, greatly reduces the checkpoint respawn annoyances and a load of other stuff.
Great game, not like the first, but good in its own way
So this game is NOT like the first Far Cry. Far Cry is more like that dev's second game Crysis. In face Crysis is pretty much Far Cry 2 in a sense, but the FC franchise was handed off to Ubisoft Montreal for the actual sequel.
Far Cry 2 is a great game. In fact, three years ago after I got my first gaming laptop, Far Cry 2 was the first game I bought for it. I wanted a great, new game that would show off my new (at the time) computer's capabilities. And this game is quite good at doing that.
The game play is quite different from the first game. While in the first game you're left to go where you want most of the time, there's still typically a "right" way to go to finish the area. This game however, does away with any pretense of direction. You take missions when you want and can work for either side of the war any time you like. Missions typically take you to new places (assuming you're doing faction based work) and allow you to approach the area from different sides in order to figure out your own path to completing the mission. One mission in which you have to take down a compound allows for several ways of approach. You can drive up to the front or back gate, use a boat to come in from another side, or you can swim up to the boathouse (I did all of these for this particular mission) and take the guys out stealthily in order to get closer before blasting the place. There's always another way to go about doing something and the game gives you plenty off freedom in this regard.
If you have no missions however you might be wandering around for quite a while to finally find one, assuming you don't know where to go yet. This might seem boring or directionless at first but once you learn where to find new missions, things get a lot more fun.
Driving by each enemy camp sees a relatively short but often enjoyable fight. Some people have complained that the enemies at the checkpoints along the roads respawn, but why would you want to drive across such a vast world and after a while, never find anybody to blow up? It's more like Metroid. Clear an area, but keep an eye out for another fight when you come back through.
Unfortunately all the animals are more tame creatures. Zebras and gazelle and things like that. No lions, hippos, or tigers despite the vast African plains and jungles. Oh well. Every once in a while one of them will jump in front of your car and die with a fantastic thud.
All you need to know is that this game is loads of fun. There are tons of missions and new guns and other weapons and vehicles to upgrade and there's always bad guys to blow up and buildings to burn down. Go buy this game and HAVE A BLAST!
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
