I remember this game, it was the first one I played when I got my first GeForce card. It's a weird (read: interesting) setting, with those Genehunters evolving depending on what they get and the alien setting. If you give this game a chance you should be able to look over minor flaws, like small problems with the controls and the game flow (some passages are a bit repetitive). But if this is not a big problem for you you can enjoy a game that is different from the usual "superhuman soldiers" setting. And that is a big bonus for me.
The game's concept is quite original for the time -- you control a team of four genetically altered soldiers. By fighting alien creatures (both hostile and not so much) and killing them, your troops can replenish their health and get some new DNA samples to expand your genetic arsenal -- different weapons, better speed, higher jumps etc. This sounds quite cool, and I was quite mesmerised by the concept.. at first.
There is very little story, however I wouldn't expect one in a shooter. All we know is that there is some Big Bad Parasite creature hiding somewhere on the planet we are, and we are to defeat that.
Level design is questionable. Textures look too samey and it is quite easy to get lost and a disoriented. Eventually you also get bored out by all that 'alienness' of the world you are trying to save. After you beat 3 levels, the next one contains a boss -- big bulky damage sponge with multiple different attack abilities similar to yours. Defeat it, move to the next 'continent' and do the same again. And then again, for total of 12 levels and three bosses. By the time I got to the 2nd boss, I barely had the will to complete the game, so I abandoned it after a couple tries to beat the boss creature. After getting through all these endless catacombs and twisted narrow tentacle-like catwalks and fighting the annoying mouse look that auto-snap to angles around -45, 0 and 45 degrees, I just didn't have any will left to fight another damage sponge, knowing that I would have to endure through another 4 levels like that.
In 2000, this would have been an interesting alternative to Quake 2, but in 2020 I'd choose Quake 2 over Evovla any time.
Like the title says. The game was quite unusual at the time it was launched and was quite the underdog. Though, like all shooter-style games, it was a one shot deal, once finished, you dumped it with all the other games you have finished. There was no point in keeping this game on your HD after finishing it even though it was a great idea and well made too, but too linear and un-replayable.
This game is incredible and so unique. Would not hesitate to buy it. Graphics are decent; it's polygons and physics based. The controls need to be learned well, as they are rather different to most modern games. Awesome fun and great upgrade/reward system, based on your own play style.
Some alien world is under attack by some weird meteor-like seed that releases bad bugs and and generally do bad things. Some wierd ship in space decides to react and releases 4 things (some bio-commandos) to deal with the infestation. That's it. Incredibly basic info about which is what or what is going on. After 1st mission briefing and later summary you should know that you are here to deal with baddies and keep local fauna at non 0 numbers (although it will not change the outcome of the game in any way if you do).
That's all you need, as gameplay-wise it's solid TPP shooter with some platforming elements. You are in control of one of 4 genohunters, with ability to swap between them any time. You can give the other three some basic orders like go there, attack that or follow me. Not that you will use them to often as AI of your companions is rather competent, they rarely get stuck, have fantastic pathfinding and can handle themselves in a fight.
Main gimmick of this game is mutation. As you kill and butcher bodies of enemies and neutral creeps you absorb their DNA. From that you can mutate your soldiers in various ways, including increased speed or jump height, getting bigger claws or other weapons or increasing your armour. That way you can either build a diverse team with skills that complement each other or try to go with a team that consists of only speed-jumping shooters, heavy bruisers or anything like that. Four things you start with are supposed to have some archetypical builds, like one dedicated to speed or other to fighting and tanking but it can be easily overwritten.
It all seems nice and fantastic but this game has it's flaws, given it is rather old and not all mechanics dated that well. Even though game runs smoothly it have almost no tutorials or minimap so it can be confusing, and may get boring after another hour of shooting and following the "O" marker with no other explaination of what to do. I personally had a blast both then and now.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
