It's crushingly average. It tries to honor the old staples by repeating them but it does so without any charm or all that much attention, taking only the boring surface bits and doing them over and over. For example, it does the Zelda overhead 2d fighting; but the hit detection is a bit questionable and other games, such as Terranigma did the overhead 2d thing with far more maneuvers like the diving jump kick. On that note, Terranigma also did the changing world as you unlock more dungeons with more competence too. The game is also exceptionally sparse. Most 2d games like Final Fantasy 4,5,6 looked way better than Evoland's top down mode. Even Zelda: Link's Awakening had more art and better handling on the GB than this game's top down sections. Another thing, did we really need a maze section? Just for the sake of having a maze?

Great idea, Completely underutilised

This is a game built around the 'evolution' of console adventure games. The idea is pretty neat. These evolutions are mostly presented to you as treasures that you find throughout the world. There a couple of places where these are used like items in a Zelda game to open up new areas and so on but sadly they're mostly used as basic nostalgia pieces for A Link to the Past and Final Fantasy VII. The game is a crude and short callout to games from your childhood, nothing more. It's a decent 4 hours, but had the concept been tied tighter to the mechanics this could have been really fascinating, which makes it all the more disappointing.

Works as a proof of concept

I really should have read the reviews more carefully before buying this game. Having played all the old Final Fantasy games, Chrono Trigger, Phantasy Star etc. I thought this would be really fun nostalgia. And for the first half hour it was. But after that it became more and more tedious. The story is bland, the battle system (or systems) too simplistic and the jokes not too clever. Seriously, why no limited amount of mana? I could use the healing and x-crystal spell as often I wanted. And the games story lasts only for 2 hours... 3 hours max. Well, you can stretch it out, if you are a completionist and try to gather all the stars and cards, but personally I really don’t care about such things (or pointless achievements in general for that matter). I understand that it's not easy for an indie developer to create a lengthy and in-depth game. On the other hand, after buying something, I become a consumer, who is interested in having a good time. This game didn't deliver.

Great potential, bland delivery

When I saw this game on GOG, I immediately purchased it thinking that the idea of it was absolutely brilliant. The trailer sure made it look like fun. But then I started playing it and quickly realized that it's way more interesting in the trailers than it is in its actuality. It's bland. The story is some sort of satire to rpgs, and it doesn't do it in a very funny way. The only thing that got a chuckle out of me were the little texts that popped up every time you unlocked a chest. They were witty. The NPCs aren't at all interesting, the party member lady is flat out boring (she has zero personality, instead acting like a machine that spews out random comments and cliched phrases like "you're my hero!") and the gameplay is slow and dull. The environments are actually really cool, and I do enjoy seeing the evolution of the areas and monsters. Other than that, I seriously compel the costumers to give it an extra thought before buying this game. With or without expectations, this game will leave you looking for more. Somewhere else. Like Final Fantasy or The Legend of Zelda.

Interesting concept, but not fun.

The game is thoughtful, interesting, and beautiful. But it's not actually fun. It's like a thesis about games, not a game itself.
