Fun but pretty flawed

For this review, I've only gotten as far as the second zone. Like most, I played this game when I was much younger. I didn't understand it then, so I just put on god mode so I could enjoy the story. I was happy to see GOG bring it back to life. It's fun, and I like the crafting system and spell systems, but this is where some of my disappointed comes from. I was excited to craft weapons with spells in them, but the way the game is balance appears to make it kind of pointless to use damage spells. In this game, damage and armor is handled in a really basic way. Every point of armor is flat reduction. The game is balanced by making it so enemies slowly regenerate HP in combat and you have a pretty high miss chance. Couple with the high damage reduction, you have to focus on staying power. The game kind of encourages you to make the main character a mage because of this. However, you can craft healing wands that any party member can use. Spells are special because they have a 100% chance hit rate, to counter this, they have low damage. But because of this, they're kind of useless. You can use runes to make them more powerful, but so far it's hard to find a weapon that can handle that. Now, this wouldn't be too big of an issue, but there's only two difficulty settings. Hard and easy, but in reality, it should be "tedious" and "plays itself". In hard mode, you're gated from areas by not having access to weapons that hit hard enough to do damage, so you have to go to the proper areas first. Easy mode is so easy that the fun strategic part of the game isn't as important. Anyways, aside from that, the story is fun enough, and you get multiple party members to control.

this game has one of the best crafting systems that you can find in a game. One of the best isometric rpg u can find on the market. I hope it gets a remake someday

It's not perfect, but it's a fun RPG.

I would easily rate this game five stars. In fact, I did. Does it have flaws? Of course. It's an older game, you'll probably experience some sort of compatibility issue (although I say that just in general because it's an older game, I've literally never had a crash or error or compatibility issue occur with this game, not even when I first played it as a teenager). I adore this game. It's a great RPG with mediocre voice-acting, excellent crafting (any item can be converted into a blueprint and have its materials swapped for another of the same type, i.e. - heavy iron armor converted to heavy steel armor or something along those lines) and interesting gameplay. Now, I can't lie to you, I've never beaten this game without cheating. It's hard. Enemies are 9 times out of 10 more powerful than you are and will smash Zak into tiny little pieces, no matter how good you get at the game. Save often and don't feel bad if you die. Unless you forget to save, because you should not have done that. The game is just plain charming, though, flaws and all. The world isn't overly-complex like most RPGs, but it's interesting and you'll find a few surprises along the way. If you think an enemy might be around the corner or you want to test yourself against a giant enemy you just KNOW is going to annihilate you, save first and have at it. The game is meant for you to take your time and experiment, explore, etc. In that sense, it's a true RPG experience. It presents a story, gives you your ultimate goal and slowly lets you head towards that goal as you gain power with extra objectives along the way. I highly recommend, if you choose not to cheat, that you work hard to gain as much experience as possible by completing every objective before moving on. It's probably not a game for everyone, but if you can love the original Resident Evil for its B-movie voice acting, ever enjoyed Two Worlds or just don't care that much about perfection and can enjoy the goofs, give Evil Islands a shot.

Nice old game

A good scenario, and still not so bad graphics. A very good skills set (though it's a shame that you cannot change your base attributes in single game). I played this game through and through something like 5 times. First 2 times I supposed the sword to be the good weapon (it was a mistake). First 4 times I supposed that it's impossible to play it with mage (it was also the mistake, see walls and cloud spells). I suspect that after several years I will play it again. With mage:-). Drawback: there is a point in time on Gipat when you are filled with despair because all the enemies are much stronger than you and that's extremely boring to kill everybody from behind, saving/loadind etc. You just have to live on. Soon you'll become a mage and have your revenge.

Unique Experience!

I keep coming back to the adventures of snarky Zak the chosen one because of how much of a one-of-a-kind game Evil Islands is. You gather materials, sneak to backstab, cast spells, command allies, go on quests...but you do all of this from the perspective of a singular character. The graphics are chunky, but pleasingly so and I dare you to name a game that lets you change your attitude and your movement with the click of a button. The sense of progression is very satisfying. You begin with a dagger and clothes and work your way up to suit of armor and powerful weapons, but it will take time, some patience, and even strategy. Zak, although the fabled chosen one, is not invincible. Some enemies you should sneak past, steal quest items from instead of attacking, shoot from a distance...etc. And it's all incredibly immersive. Collect skins from kills. Look at foot prints to determine where enemies are going before you see them. The voice acting is a little bizarre but still very enduring. Zak himself is a force of personality who likes making declarative statements so I was never bored with the character. This game takes some dedication and indeed patience (a lot of sneaking around at first) but it's rewarding, it's original, and it's a solid package of atmospheric RPG meat.
