Waking up in a strange place with no memory of who you are, you must undertake the difficult and arduous journey of finding out who you really are. The only clue you have is a hastily written note telling you to meet a stranger in the nearest town. Thus begins your first step into the wondrous and dangerous world of Eschalon: Book I.
Eschalon: Book I is a role-playing game game designed from the ground up to offer an experience not unlike the classics of the RPG genre. You'll venture through massive outdoor environments and delve deep into sprawling dungeons as you seek to uncover the mystery of who, or what, you really are.
This title was developed with the classic role-playing fans in mind. It sports an old-school feel, isometric graphics, large open-ended world, and classic cRPG gameplay mechanics, just to fit perfectly with your idea of how a computer role-playing game should be like.
Eschalon: Book I is a turn-based, single-player RPG that's carefully designed to feel like the great old school RPGs of the past such as Ultima or Might & Magic.
Choose from 24 unique skills to make the character you want and 8 base attributes that affect your character’s every action throughout the game.
A combination of randomly generated treasure and carefully hidden goodies means that no two games will play the exact same way.
This game is fun and pretty addicting.
The mechanics are maybe a little too simple, and the story is very basic.
Combat as a mage is mostly killing one enemy and running away to rest and regenerate your magic energy.
You can beat it in less than 20 hours, though I didn't finish all the side quests.
I think the graphics and sound are nice.
Since it's free, definitely give it a chance.
The game is good at delivering exactly what we can expect when seing the graphics.
It is old-school in design, and very frustrating at times, but overall I enjoyed it. Everything is text based, there are some typos in the text, and the combat is hard, very hard, I died a lot, but wanted to continue the game anyways.
The graphics are old-school, but in the end functional and I grew fond of them. All the skills were useful, so I wanted a lot of them, but in the end I was not specialized enough and died a lot. I had to grind a bit and specialize to finish the game. I also saved a lot to avoid encounters at night. Also, it is pretty easy to run out of money.
I'd say the game has a balance issue, but it did not prevent me from enjoying it.
The first contact with the game is nice. Graphics are deliciously outdated, character sheet is fine, some more info could be given on the inner workings of the different skills, and the starting point, though tried and tired (amnesia with a look here for the next note type note) always works.
Monsters are allright by the obvious old school feeling of the game.
However... the story is thin, the world is ... empty. Not as in real forest empty, but as in bad empty. oh a beach. Oh two or three pirates / ship sinkers camp. They attack on sight. Ok... city? 4 persons, 5 dialog trees and that is all. This is more of a turn by turn beat them up with scenario that anything close to role-playing, whether linear and playing an imposed role or open and choosing your persona. Dialogue are poor to say the least, descriptions are mostly absent.
You just feel like an NPC waiting for the Hero to come up and make things interesting.
Full disclosure: I got this game game for free during one of GOG's free giveaways. So, my expectations weren't as high as they might have been if I had paid full price for this game. Having said that, I'm still really disappointed with the overall feel of this game. I enjoyed the isometric perspective, which reminded me a lot of the old Fallout games before they went 3D. I'm used to these older RPG's being a bit slower in their pacing, so I was able to be patient with the game, at least for awhile.
What I really disliked about this game was the way that it was artificially slowed down. I'm not just talking about the walking speed of the PC either. That was bad enough. But the way that most of the maps are just so cluttered, and that fact that fast travel becomes somewhat useless in certain areas of the game combine to make this game feel much slower paced that what it really is. I think that the game could have benefitted from alternative means of travel, like horses, or a better teleportation system.
The NPC's also become boring and tedious to talk to. Most of them don't even react when you loot their chests. As an experiment, I also killed one of the town guards in Aridell. No reaction from anyone. As far as the dialogue goes, it's easy enough to navigate through.
The mapping system is another point of contention. I like that the cartography skill plays a part in how good or bad the maps looks as you traverse the land. The problem is that your PC is represented by a dot so small that most of the time I couldn't tell where I was at. So in one sense, I had to get to know the lay of the land, which was good for an old-school gamer like myself. But if you're going to take the time to put in a fancy mapping system, at least make it useful.
Overall, the game is a solid effort. There's just not quite enough polish to hold my attention for the long-term. 3 out of 5 stars.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
