Award-winning Passion Project
The game was first prototyped as an award-winning and much-loved student project. The original team has reformed and expanded as Fireplace Games to increase the scope, sweep and grandeur of En Garde!
A fun yet simple fighting system on top of beautiful environnements and great voice acting, the final touch being a soundtrack perfectly chosen for the atmosphere wanted. "En Garde!" while short gives a good but simple story with really endearing characters and while taking a lot from classic Souls and Action games it manages to be a lot less punitive. The parkour can be a bit weird at times with the character grappling but movement is overall good with a few great use of parkour in combat to build a skill meter and unleash some powerful attacks. In the end "En Garde!" is definitly worth a play and for the ones asking for a little more an Arena Mode is unlocked after beating the story! 8/10
I was eagerly awaiting this game for some unique rapier-based swordplay, and was a bit disappointed to find out that it's just another Arkham-style beat-em-up with the tired old one-button attack, counter when you see a big blue flash, dodge when you see a big red flash. The environmental hazards and focus on splitting your enemies up is just enough to make it feel somewhat fresh, though I wish it felt more like I was using a rapier than just bashing people to death with a club.
Unfortunately the "golden age of swashbuckling comedy" vibe that the marketing promised is simply not present. There's essentially just some isolated references to old movies, while the characters themselves and the dialogue are anything but classic. It's more of a cartoonish, modern, irreverent parody version of classic swashbuckler movies than a loving homage. Honestly the guards are more endearing than the main character. A missed opportunity to really revisit the golden age of swashbuckler movies!
Sloppy controls, bad writing, overly childish. Maybe i just wasn't the target audience on that last one. But Still bad writting and sloppy controls absolutely kill it for me.
The game is a very fun experience but the bosses except for one always summon's lackey's that just tend to be very annoying, still it's a fun game and i highly recommend, It's short but not too short
