Emperor of the Fading Suns has continued to inspire players not just because of the game itself, but because of the many great mods fans made for the game. The focus of the 1.5 patch is to greatly enhance modding capabilities. Expect many more great mods for the game.
One of the most dramatic changes is one of the least seen. The game was initially built using the Watcom development environment, and one of the first things we had to do was migrate it to Visual Studio. Additionally, the 1.5 patch adds:

Still have the old copy...
... just reinstalled it about a year ago. At that point, I haven't played it for 15 years at least. But folks, this game holds up. I'm pretty sure all that's need to be said have been said, I just wanted to add, that it's not the rose tinted glasses that give this one a 4/5 average rating.

Likely my favorite game of all time
I've been playing this game since I found its demo included on a demo CD WAYYYY back in 1996 or so. Got the full game later on. As the years went by it just never got old. Only stopped when the computer I last had it on died around *2012* and I could no longer find the CD. That's the staying power it had. I've already spent hours on it after buying it today and I can say that it still holds up as well as ever. Nostalgia is, obviously, a factor with any old game like this. That said, the game still satisfies in a way that most older games I've come back to years later have not. So I think there's something real there. The game has what was, at the time, a very unique setting and feel. Other games/settings have come out that are similar in the 20 years since but I think it still has a lot going for it to set it apart. It also has easily the most appealing graphics of any old 2D strategy game I ever played. Gameplay takes place on two fronts: planets and space. Space consists of set paths between planets and it somewhat less developed. Planetside is where most of the action is. Different cities (tile improvements) either produce different units or different resources. Most of your cities or resource producers which have access to only the most basic units. They exist to support the forts, factories and starports that will be producing basically the entirety of your offensive units. The AI is a bit hit & miss. It's not totally braindead but it doesn't know what to do with certain situations and may act erratically as a result. Most commonly this takes the form of recruiting an army of useless units. There are multiple venerable mods that address this, however, including Emperor Wars and Reality. Overall, I'd recommend EFS to people who enjoy old strategy games, people who enjoy unique settings (at $6, I'd say it's worth it) and people who just want to try something different from the standard template Civ-likes the dominate the market these days.

Loved it for years and now it's updated!
I have played this game for years, on and off. Always thought it deserved a sequel. Well the enhanced version is an update, not a sequel, but it feels like a new game. This is a turned based 4X strategy game set in the Fading Suns universe. The resource management is complex enough to be challenging, but not to the point of becoming onerous. The same is true for the technology development. Combat is relatively simple, but rewarding. I am not an unbiased reviewer, I have loved and played this game for decades at this point. I highly recommend it.
