Eliza is a visual novel about an AI counseling program, the people who develop it, and the people who use it. Follow Evelyn Ishino-Aubrey as she reconnects with people from her past, gets to know the people of Seattle who use Eliza for counseling, and decides the course of her future.

After abandoning her high-powered tech career and a mysterious three-year absence, Evelyn Ishino-Aubrey resurfaces working as a proxy for a virtual counseling app called Eliza. Her job consists solely of reading a script provided to her in real-time by an AI, leaving her no autonomy over what she says. Is Eliza a technological marvel that brings therapy to those who otherwise couldn’t access it? Or is it an ineffective replacement and another vector for technology companies to gain control over our lives and humanity?

As she reconnects with people from her past and gets to know the ordinary people of Seattle who use Eliza for counseling, Evelyn finds herself caught in the middle between differing sides of the argument— and as she begins to question everything about her past life and future purpose in the world, it becomes clear she must confront the turmoil and darkness inside.

Zachtronics make a detour from its puzzle game destiny with the visual novel Eliza. It's slick in its design, though shy on the big choices you might expect from most visual novels. Still, packed with a stellar solitaire minigame, impressive voice acting, and one of the most prescient narratives I've seen in games, if you're a fan at all of interactive stories that'll have you gripped from start to finish, Eliza is it.

Couldn't stop playing

This is not a perfect game, but what is there is done extremely well. The game is thought-provoking an the writing is stellar. I really liked the protagonist as well, even though I think perhaps she could've been fleshed out a little more. One of the biggest strenghts are probably the counseling sessions, with very good characters that each feel like they could be actualy people. The biggest criticism, if I can call it that: sometimes it's a bit of a 'slideshow'. I mean most Visuel Novels have several facial expressions or lip sync, here the characters and their expressions don't really move and don't change. I didn't mind, but perhaps some people will. Luckily, the English voice acting is superb. Music and sound effects are appropriate, they are good but kind of stay in the background. Finally, the artwork is beautiful, even though there aren't that much scenes. Again didn't really bother me. For some, it might be a little on the short side. But even then, I think it's definitely worth it in a sale.

Fabuła, która wciąga.

Grę wprawdzie posiadam na innej platformie, ale ponieważ jestem świeżo po ukończeniu Elizy - to chciałem pochwalić tę niezależną perełkę, która mnie wciągnęła jak dobry film lub serial. "Eliza" - gra z gatunku visual novel, którego nie jestem jakimś znawcą czy entuzjastą bo zwyczajnie nie grałem wcześniej w gry tego typu. A jest ona jest specyficzna, przynajmniej dla takich osób jak ja. Pewnie, że można narzekać, że gra ogólnie polega na czytaniu dialogów i klikaniu myszką. Pewnie, że można narzekać że gracz ogólnie ma mały wpływ na fabułę, która dla większości graczy okaże się ona mało ciekawa lub wręcz nudna. Są jednak osoby, dla których historia o depresji, samotności, stracie, wypaleniu - słowem: o problemach zwykłych ludzi - może okazać się ciekawa i wciągająca. O tym jak pozornie innowacyjna i pożyteczna technologia ma na nas wpływ i jak przez to tracimy kontakty między ludzkie. Jak ktoś lubi gry nastawione na głębsze przemyślenia o sensie życia to polecam. Oprócz historii fabularnej Eliza posiada fajnie napisane postacie, których wspomnienia i przemyślenia chce się wysłuchać. Sam osobiście trochę utożsamiałem się z główną bohaterką w pewnych kwestiach co w sumie rzadko mi się zdarza w grach. Na pewno nie spodziewałbym się takich odczuć w tego typu grze, której niektórzy nawet nie nazwali by grą jako tako tylko pokaz slajdów :) Tym nie mniej, za grosze otrzymałem tytuł, który wciągnął mnie na dobre parę godzin i skłonił do kilku refleksji nad życiem. Warto było, tym bardziej że gra ma kilka zakończeń i niewykluczone że kiedyś do niej wrócę. Trzeba tylko pamiętać, że gra jest w wersji angielskiej co może nieco utrudnić jej odbiór, ale w grze język angielski nie jest jakoś mocno zaawansowany.

A pretentious relic

Eliza has serious problems: 1. The game makes you feel annoyed & without agency by design to make a message. You can choose an ending, but there is literally no interaction until then. Just clicking through dialogue. 2. The "AI" is just a glorified chatbot. The therapy sessions are just the Bot being like "Its raining, huh?", "How does that make you feel" & "Do some breathing exercises & take some drugs". Incredibly annoying by design. And while modern AIs deserve a lot of criticism, these criticisms are completely different from this bland mess. 3. The overarching message is equally bland: corpo=bad because inhuman. This great revelation is screaming through every single scene & character. Its not wrong, but incredibly boring very quickly. The voice actors were great & the writers were really good at creating interesting characters feeling human. Its just a real shame the game is such a bland mess.
