Gorgeous, fun, and challenging!

Eagle Island will challenge you. This is not an easy game by any means. It's meant to challenge you, and it will do that. You play as a young boy named Quill, washed ashore with his owl companions Koji and Ichiro. Ichiro is kidnapped, and Quill and Koji set off to rescue them. The story is fairly straightforward, but there's enough there to keep you moving ahead. There are some twists that are nicely done but I'm not going to spoil them here. The island is a hub, with entrances to dungeons located in the different biomes that make up the island. Areas are locked off until you acquire an ability from a dungeon. But Eagle Island is NOT a Metroidvania: it takes some inspiration from the genre, but if you're expecting a Metroidvania you'll be disappointed. The levels are procedurally generated, with them changing on each run, but the hub world is static, allowing for easy navigation. The gameplay is unique, and a lot of fun. Quill can't attack directly. Instead he uses Koji as a projectile to attack enemies found in the dungeons. Quill calls the owl to him, aiming in any of the 8 cardinal directions available on a d-pad, and releases Koji towards the enemy. The game promotes accuracy: if you miss your shot, Quill will be defenseless for a second or so before Koji has recovered from the missed attack run and returns to him. Koji is not a gun: he takes time to reach his target and return to the player. Defeating enemies quickly rewards the player with Manaroc, used to charge elemental attacks, and a 4-times combo grants health. With 3 hp on 'core' difficulty, you'll need to master those combos. Unlockable permanent abilities as the story progresses helps, and temporary in-level perks tweak the gameplay nicely. You do lose the 'perks' if you die in the level, though your permanent ability upgrades always remain. The game is gorgeous. Beautiful pixel art and well-animated characters and enemies. TLDR: Game good. Game hard. Game fun.

Looks gorgeous but horribly frustrating

It's rare that I feel such disappointment and frustration with a game that I have been looking forward to. Despite what it might seem, this is not really a metroidvania, something that I had completely missed. Instead you traverse the titular island and locate dungeons which are procedurally generated and that's where the meat of the game lies. Eagle Island does several things right, the user has an unusally high degree of control over difficulty, gameplay features and personal settings. For instance, instead of having random dungeons all the time, you can set the seed to a preset one that the developers have come up with. Quite helpful if you are like me and is a bit tired of all the games that brag about procedural generation. It also certainly looks gorgeous with impressive pixel art and it sounds great as well. However the gameplay constantly feels stiff and frustrating to the point I just gave up close to the end. No matter what I do, I feel that my character is constantly rather lacking in his abilities. Both the attack range and speed is low, many attacks miss due to strange and small hitboxes, while the player hitbox is huge, cooldown between attacks, especially if you miss and hit a wall, is crippling. Many of these shortcomings can be remedied with abilities that you find in chests in the dungeons. However, due to random nature of the game you can't be sure that you will find these abilites. Secondly, all these abilites are timebased so even if you find a good one it will likely not last even one dungeon, and even if they do, they don't carry over between dungeons. Of course the vast majority of abilities are absolute garbage, and I spent most of my time ignoring them. In conclusion, there is the nucleus of a great game here but several things needs to be tweaked in order to provide a better experience.

Really fun spin on platforme genre

With the myriad of metroidvania's and platformers this one really stands out. Enough of a story and lore for the type of game it is. Interesting attack system with plenty of upgrades and power ups to make things interesting. Iron's out some of the annoyin aspects of roguelite by letting you store power ups along with getting permenant upgrades. Overworld serves its purpose with the fun part discovering secret lore paintings. Then there is the TWIST mode and other content that is icing on the cake. One thing I will point out this game funny enough is better with keyboard and mouse. The platforming is somewhat simple with the main challenge being the enemies. It requires more percision and accuracy which is better with keyboard and mouse. Not a negative but important to know.

Good Little Game

I thought this game was more of an adventure game that played similarly to something like Hollow Knight or Shovel Knight, but it's actually more of a rogue like game than anything else. That being said, it's a really fun little game to play, and contains a lot of great content and features. The controls are fairly smooth, and the gameplay and storyline are rather enjoyable. I haven't put all that much time into it yet, but I can tell that this is going to bring quite a few hours of entertainment. It's well worth picking up.

A Catapult Platformer

Before I say anything I just want to give my own perpective from a gamer who likes retrogames and soul crushingly hard games. I admit I started with an easier difficulty when i tried out this game because it is nothing I have played before its like Angry Birds and Mario mixed together but thats just a generalization there's a lot more with good amount of challenges, interesting mechanics and possibly some frustrations but this game gives you plenty of options which I will get into more later on. Graphics: I think it's one of the most gorgeous pixel graphics I have seen in games the art and the retro style animations. I think it's safe to say it one of the best looking platformers out there. Gameplay: Alright this is where I think game stands out the most forget I said about it being Mario because you don't jump on npcs to kill them you use your trusty owl instead. That's not all you must aim you can even do it mid air you have couple of seconds while you freeze take a shot before falling. You also have diefferent elements fire, ice, electric and normal each with their own properties. Music: Oh boy the music is great I think it fits the game perfectly. Sometimes I wish i could just listen to it alone it's just that good. Controls: I think this is where the game is a bit lacking and it makes up for it. For example me personally don't like the default controls I changed the key bindings I recommend you do it too especially if you find the aiming a bit annoying try enabling mouse controls or use a controller whatever you find comfortable. I use WASD for movement and spacebar for jump with mouse controls enabled. Difficulty: As I have mentioned I like hard games because it means that there is something for me to learn or improve on. I recommend starting with casual there's no shame in that once you improve you can change the difficulty later without starting an entire new save. The game is very replayable with revisitng levels both generated and handcrafted.
