This game is absolutely great turn strategy experience. It's like HoMM 3 + Master of Magic + interesting plot.
Unfortunetly it's also very demanding game. Even on begginer level one can not just play for the plot - every wrong move is harshly punished. That's why I give it ony 4 of 5 stars. I understand that game was design to be hardcore oldschool experience, but still with plot better than any HoMM camaign it's sad, that I can not recommend this game to a casual player.
And now, I;m going back to play Eador: Genesis. Just... one... more... turn...
I see a lot of bad reviews based on recent computers. The following steps should help:
1. Download NtSleep.exe from the web, or download the fan made launcher on the GoG forums (by Preveder).
2. Using Explorer, right click on NtSleep.exe -> Properties -> Compatibility -> check 'Run this program as administrator'.
3. Change your shortcut in the programs menu to be:
"C:GamesEador - GenesisNtSleep.exe" /timer=2 eador.exe f
(Obviously this should be where it's installed).
4. Enjoy the best fantasy TBS out there :)
5. (Optional) Install the New Horizons mod. Search for The Guild of Craftsmen eador.com and you'll see it in the forum. It's excellent!
I've been a PC gamer since the late 80s. I love old PC games. However, some of my favorites are a little....difficult to jump back into. I mean, let's be fair here: gaming has evolved (in some good ways, but also in some bad ways). There are old games that I once loved like Ultima III, Descent, Zork, and MoO that I remember fondly, but they're really clunky to jump back into.
Enter Eador. It's has that old-school "let's add everything we can to the game" sort of mentality, but it also has a helpful tutorial and a fairly streamlined menu system. Similar games like HoM&M, Warlords, and Master of Magic are all fun in their own right, but Eador is far easier to jump into, whether your a PC vet or a newbie to these sort of games.
What is especially nice about the game is that you have complete freedom as to how you play the game. Do you want to park your butt at home and slowly develop your castle? Sure, go ahead. Do you want to ignore your castle and explore as far out into the map as you can? Good luck, because the maps are huge. Wanna be the Lone Ranger badass who can solo every battle? Go ahead. Want to command a well-trained, well-equipped, high-level band of warriors? Go for it. Want to summon huge armies of bizarre creatures to fight on your behalf? Go ahead. Want to build the most powerful swords and armor at your castle? Want to research rare spells? Want to go on dozens upon dozens of quests? Want to create a vibrant economy at your home base? Okay, you get the idea. The sheer amount of content in this game is unbelievable. A lot of old school games were jam-packed with content like this. Nowadays it's all DLC and expansion packs. On top of all that, the game can be played in small bursts or for hours on end. It has that infamous "one more turn" addictiveness, but if I want to jump in and play for 15 minutes before I go to work, that's fine too.
This doesn't bother ME, but some people might not like the simple graphics. They don't look bad. They're just simple, and there aren't many animations to speak of. Additionally, everything is conveyed in text. Again, I don't mind, but some people do.
Give the game a try. After a quick 10 minute tutorial, the game cuts the reigns and you're completely free to approach the game as you see fit.
If you loved 90's TBS games with an RPG flair and are also a fan of hex-based map wars, hey, this is the game for you. If you enjoyed Heroes of Might and Magic you'll enjoy this. But unlike in HOMM where you can freely move about the map exploring, this one has a hex grid and you must own a territory by battling or negotiating for it to move through it and in that sense, it feels like a Civilization or other turn-based strategy game, although a lite version. This game is much more HOMM than it is Civ. That being said, it's a ton of fun and it's cheap. It was made by one person in an indie studio in Russia and there's a real depth of gameplay here that you don't even necessarily get in AAA titles. The only thing that might detract is that there aren't battle animations for your units or movement animations for your heroes on the map. I also found that I spend most of my time battling the enemy armies and don't have as much time to really explore the world and RPG elements. I love the aesthetic, though, and put plenty of time in. I'll give you a couple of tips: Use healers to keep your units alive so they can level up. If you treat your units like expendable canon fodder, you're going to struggle later. That being said, don't stress if you lose a few. The fastest way to level your hero is by capturing territories. It's also easiest for new players to use the Scout, IMHO, but the Warrior works, too. Finally: GLHF!!!111
