After a deadly circus fire shatters his world and tarnishes his name, Dropsy the Clown finds himself on a journey of self-discovery through a story that harnesses powerful themes of love and kindness. With his father gravely ill and the world turning its back on a once happy-go-lucky clown, Dropsy will need to help those in need, hug total strangers, and unravel dark and shameful secrets from his past on the way to redemption. Oh, and Dropsy can also talk to animals.
Dropsy is a non-traditional take on the classic point and click adventure formula starring the game’s perpetually carefree namesake clown as he explores a richly detailed world full of colorful characters and sinister secrets, doling out hugs along the way. Rather than lead players on a singular narrative path, players are free to choose which avenues of adventure they want to explore in an open world setting and can piece the puzzles and story together however they choose.
Open World Adventure – Players are free to choose which avenues of adventure they want to explore in an open world setting and can piece the puzzles and story together however they choose.
Puzzles and Hugs – Challenging puzzles and complex conundrums stand between Dropsy and his goal of redemption but with some clever thinking and cheerful hugs, Dropsy can change his luck and win the hearts of the people around him.
Text Free Experience – Communicate with a bizarre and colourful cast of characters through an innovative use of visual icons rather than traditional text-based dialog trees.

It seems like GOG is a really big pain to give updates to, because this is the second game that has had a major free update on Steam, but that isn't on GOG. The Dev has stated that they plan to update the GOG version in the future, but it seems like GOG is just giving them a hard time for some reason. Buy on Steam until the situation is resolved. This 100% is not the dev's fault so please don't give them a hard time about it.
Good visuals (i.e. this game has unique, distinctive art style), but they can only help shifting the initial sell, and I couldn't find anything for me to stay with the game 'till completion, because you'll end up revolving around a few dozens of screens multiple times to find a missing piece of a puzzle (and you're not sure which puzzle exactly you're trying to solve at any selected moment).
If you're more into puzzle solving than item hunting and vaguely aimless walking, I'd suggest avoiding this purchase (to be fair, they do feature the open worldness of the game right at the top of the description, so you've been warned)
Dropsy is really one of the best games of the genre. Feels both warm and cold at the same time, it's like it tries to balance out the overwhelming darkness of the plot and people, with a lovable main character that uses hugs as his main weapon - which is a very nice fu-k you to current trends, and for that I applaud.
During play, I saw indirect commentaries of many, many things that are wrong about today: media manipulation, violence, hive-minded people with wrong facts, seemingly nice corporations, slave-like working conditions; also there's a town full of people that don't want to help you in any way unless you give them something in exchange first, not unlike what's happening today everywhere.
Then again, you have a fat, ugly clown (how can he be more alienating!) that wants to hug you because it's his primal need: just being nice, regardless of everything else. Dropsy, in its own way, feels insanely more human than any of us, which we are already lost in hate and overall discomfort of society.
On the negative side, I feel a bit disappointed with the gameplay itself: I thought Dropsy was going to experiment with some kind of new modes on how to develop the story, but the branching is quite linear and standard. Yet, Dropsy innovates with its surrealistic storytelling and non-verbal communication (though already done by Botanicula and probably others before).
And I have to mention the superb OST made by Chris Schlarb. I've even put "In The Court of the Junkyard King" on repeat for a whole day while I was doing other stuff.
This game is really what's good about games today: the way you can say a thousand things in a way no other medium can do. It's a must play, and I recommend it to anyone who cares just a little bit about games overall.
Never before have I seen such a scary looking character have such an adorable and warm storyline. How many other games have a dedicated 'hug' button? The game feels like a labour of love and is well worth experiencing. It's relatively short (you can play through in a long afternoon) and some of the puzzles are pretty obtuse. I had to use a walkthrough several times to get through the main quest.
It was a one-of-a-kind experience. At first I was confused - by the game's non-verbal communication system, the sheer magnitude of the game world, and my exact role in it. But soon I was hooked, running around spreading love, giving hugs, gathering magnetophone tapes and peeing on hydrants. The art is fantastically colorful, and the soundtrack's pure bliss (I got the Warm, Damp Hug DLC so I could take it with me and listen to it wherever), and while the story and the puzzles confused the hell out of me sometimes, it's mostly because I'm not very observant & at this time of the year my brain goes into semi-hybernation. But nevermind that! It's a lovely game about kindness and friendship and fun -- and while it does have its darker moments, all ends well.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
