First Impression: Fun but hard

I played this game for some hours today and I really enjoyed it. I played through the first 5 Levels and stopped at the 6th with about 109 Rooms, so I have about the first third of the game covered. This game really plays different from Drod, altough the basic walking and sword swining still applies. This time the enemies stand around and as soon as you touch them with your sword, you alternate hitting each other until one of you drops dead to the ground. The damage done this way is derived from equipment and upgrades you find laying around. As I find Drod to be really hard once you reach midgame, I hoped that the RPG mechanics of this game would make for an easier experience. This was the case in the lower levels, however, I found the difficulty curve to get much steeper once you enter the 5th level. I learned the hard way that you are not supposed to open every door you encounter and beat every monster. Instead the game wants you to use your HP, your only ressource, carefully to acquire as many upgrades as possibles while only fighting enemies if you really have to. Keeping this in mind from the beginning, I'm sure the game is far easier on the later parts. In this sense, the rpg version of drod is harder than your standard drod as you have an additionally layer of ressource management on top of the usual puzzles. If you like drod, you probably already know about this game, but if you're looking for a puzzler/rpg /ressource management game, this is probably for you.

A great spin-off

I'm a long-time DROD player and this is a great side-line addition to the main *logy. It not only goes to show how versatile the game engine is, but recreates a genre which has been under-represented in the last decade at least. What you'll find here is a tactical game based on the classic tile-based resource optimisation - your own health and armour values + deciding who to fight and in what order is "all" you'll need to work out to solve each level. This will of course not be easy and with the addition of multiple usable items affecting each confrontation, this journey ends up being a true challenge even for the best of minds. Worth mentioning is the interface using modern graphics and threaded throughout is a spectacular storyline. This may lull the player into a false sense of security though so beware :) The game is extremely enjoyable and relaxing - yet will get as involved and more mind-bending each time you dare to push on :) Cheers!

not your typical drod game

DROD is a long-running franchise of puzzle games, sadly very underrated, but in 2008 Caravel Games decided to try something a little bit different. Still set in the same universe as the other games, DROD RPG takes a few steps away from regular puzzlers. Your task is to guide Tendry, a brave soldier through several levels (12 plus a secret stage, each consisting of about 20-30 rooms or more). It's still very much a puzzle game but apart from collecting keys (different kinds open different doors, so you'll have to think twice before using them) you'll also need to fight all sorts of enemies (humans and monsters alike), collect money (by fighting said enemies) and get more powerful to be able to survive. While still not an RPG, despite its title, the game now has objects you can use (some only once, some more than once) and you can raise (or level, if you wanna stick to RPG terms) your HP, armor and defense to make things easier. The top-down perspective and the mini-map makes it easy to get an overview of the levels and think up a grand strategy, but sometimes you'll need to try different approaches to certain problems. No matter how tempting it is to kill everything as soon as you see them, it's a bad idea. Wait till you get stronger/more powerful, and in the meantime, try to think of alternate solutions, like bypassing doors, going round enemies without initiating a fight (which is turn-based, by the way), and so on. Be sure to save as often as possible, though, because it's easy to run into dead ends sometimes. Normally this would make me irritated, and admittedly this game had the same effect on me initially, but after I realized my mistakes (not using items/keys optimally, starting fights with monsters left and right, since 'Hey, there's a health potion right there, why should I care?', not looking for secret areas, etc.) I started over and had a much more fulfilling experience. And despite it being a long game (relatively speaking, but when you think it's over after a few hours, it turns out it's only the end of the first half), replaying certain areas with a more thought-out strategy doesn't take very long at all. The game is a huge amount of fun, very easy to pick up and pretty hard to put down. Just one more room... (It also has some references to other titles in the series but you'll be fine playing it without any prior knowledge.) Pros: - Takes a while to complete (~8 hours or more) - Save anywhere (you'll need it!) - Active community on the game's website - Replayability (try for a higher score, look for secret areas or alternate solutions, download user-made levels, etc.) Cons: - A little bit on the trial-and-error side, and sometimes the error part only becomes evident later, so save often - The voice acting is pretty poor, though after a while I found at least the main charcter's voice more funny than annoying

mercyless puzzle game

first time i play Drod game and i can say for sure, its the hardest puzzle game i played in my life. since you start the game, all decision count to keep going on through next levels. Your game if you are crayz hardcore try hard puzzle gamer.

DROD RPG: Tendry's Tale

Didn't get too far on my first attempt but had fun. Game play is different than most but easily picked up. I used the no mouse option and found controls easy to manipulate (too bad my fingers are so clumsy), Problem surfaced when I tried to start the game again. The game will only run from the launch game link on the install screen. Attempting to start a game from shortcut or exe file doesn't work. If I re-install game and launch from install screen game show current save. Everything in the game seems to be working OK otherwise. Annoying to have to re-install game every time I want to play. Search of community was negative. Any suggestions? Can't give 5 stars but game seems worth your time.
