Innovative Gameplay horrible Storytelling
Driftland features an innovative gameplay, fun to play with seperate isles and have to think strategically when moving & placing isles. Example: Where to place an isle to built up a strong defence around your main isle? (But: dont expect a Majesty-like game - no similarity) Talking about Singeplayer - idk about Multiplay! Pro/Contra (contra longer, but I just want to explain, do -not- take it for more contra per se): + 4 races with significantly different gameplay/mechanics/magic to succeed + In theory interessting story & creative missions + Unique & flawless working drag&place of isles + Interessting economy, isle have different amounts of some ressources + Good variance of units&buildings, each race has something unique ~ Fair balancing, story AI okay, mediocre skirmish ~ Good graphic tho many particle effects, hence ressource hungry - Horrible (!) story telling! On the shop page and at game start is the one and only trailer. Never again any kind of slideshow, animation, cutscene or anything but a few text lines. Won a mission? Read a few text lines that are also briefing for the next mission. Even final campaign missions are just ~10 lines to read, that's it. Don't get me wrong, I know, small dev studio. But it's a huge letdown, other small dev studios do it (way) better! I didn't expect AAA cutscenes or fancy DIII-animations & epic voice acting, but nothing at all? I feel tricked by the trailer, it suggests better storytelling - "Storytelling" within missions: Text boxes, popping up with poor timing, e.g. in final battles, when you have other things to do than reading text - Mentioned boxes appear in same box as the ever repeating tutorial info. You get the same basic info again and again. Annoying "spamming" of basics during final battles... You get used to skip them - well, if it was a rare story fragment: bad luck All in all a game worth playing if you are interessted in innovative gameplay and strategy games. Just be warned: next to no storytelling.
