I played nearly through the Game last year with this version.
Encountered 2 Bugs,1 i could solve cause it seem to be pretty common.Was abug where you have to play a xoxox game in a tavern.
The second was a bug where during a sneaking mission the game froze every time i tried it.
Problem is,it was part of the Main Quest.
Thus i had to stop my playthrough at a point where i was heavily immersed in the game.
Pretty sad.
But i wonder how many of the reviewers here played acutally full through this version.
Aside of this its a really nice Rpg,enjoyed the time in this world.
BEWARE! I was receiving an error message the first time I tried to save. Solution: make an exception for the game in your antivirus. It appears that (without it) it couldn’t write the save files in the "My Documents" file.
The game starts hard. Some advice for throughout: play slowly, be patient, explore the maps, choose your battles, talk/listen to people. And, considering the partial enemy respawn, don’t spread your earned points too thin (in many skills). You won’t have a chance to correct wrong level-ups. No re-spec. Profession pays-off. Make a plan from the beginning, for skills to invest at.
The battle is real-time with pause and it is advised to pause often to give orders for special attacks to particular enemies.
Speaking about maps, the game isn’t an open-world in the completely-open-map meaning of the term. Your main hub will be the city of Ferdok, where you’ll get a house, and, after that, each time you will be visiting other regions/maps in order to complete a part of the main questline (and side quests) in that region.
I guess you’ve already read that you can’t return to a region after you leave. This is the case ONLY IF YOU HAVE COMPLETED the part of the main questline, for which you were sent there in the first place! Then you won’t be allowed to return in that region and the uncompleted side-quests will fail. Don’t worry, you’ll receive a message when it comes to that. On the other hand, if you haven’t completed the part of the main questline in that region, you can travel freely between that region and Ferdok!
There are many quests! And all of them are interesting (and some of them, funny). Plenty things to do in each map. Also, I really liked that side quests in Ferdok aren’t available all at once! Each time you return to Ferdok to deliver a main mission, new side quests in town become available!
As the only negative, I’d say that the casting of spells is slow, takes some crucial seconds…
I’d buy The River of Time if it is brought in GOG.
YAY thanks GOG and radon labs for bringing this here. Now do the same with "Am Fluss der Zeit" and the dlc "Phineassons Geheimnis". Played this when it came out.
This game is a good party based RPG. If you like games like Dragon Age (the first one), you should enjoy this one too. However, I have several gripes with this game.
First, the story, the setting, the characters are little too much generic. You have your classic fantasy setting with dwarves, elves, mages, dragons... You name it. You have story with the chosen one and magical artifacts. You have companions who fit the templates - charming rogue, beautiful elven lady with connection to nature, strong dwarf warrior that likes to drink, evil necromancers with evil plans and so on. You will get everything you would expect from classic fantasy setting - but nothing more. However, it all works together really well. The unique (at least for me) Dark Eye rules set with refined gameplay makes it enjoyable experience. Just know what you can expect from this.
My second issue is lack of fast travel.
Overall, very enjoyable game with refined gameplay and lots of content. Recommend.
If you like the old type of cRPGs like Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter Nights, this is a game that worths give a try. Soon it will drag you into a pure western fantasy world. The setting. Specially the art, the music, gives everything a lover of western RPGs is looking for
