Drakensang is a third-person party-based RPG based on the pen & paper role-play rules of The Dark Eye. Drakensang is the first PC game for over 10 years to be based on Germany's most successful and popular role-play system.
Drakensang builds on the pen & paper rules as applied in version 4.0. The developers have optimized the rulebook specially for the PC realization in order to make the game more accessible. But the essential qualities and the depth of the original rules have not been compromised.

Just a great RPG that gets harder than you might think. Dont try understanding the full systems. some ae autistic and others exist so you learn the value of learning a trade. get unionized and fighting hooked nosed few.....
A great CRPG reminiscent of Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale. 26 archetypes are available to play through. The story is engaging albeit anyone familiar with fantasy RPGs will instantly recognize it. Sadly it suffers from a minor but fatal bug. In the quest "A Scrap of Cloth" I could not talk to the guard to open the door into the area I needed to go. This wouldn't be so bad if it was a side quest but it's part of the main storyline. This prematurely ended my experience after investing 40+ hours in the game. As much as I hate to give it one star that fatal bug won't allow me to proceed in the game. Buy the game on sale if you'd like to be disappointed.
Genuinely a terrible combat experience.
Have a mix of ranged and melee fighters?
Well that's nice but the game doesn't care, all 12 100 hp enemies will bumrush your twig ranged/magic character. NO ATTACKS OF OPPORTUNITY so they can happily bumrush u with no consequences.
Follow the instructions the game gives you to "avoid" poison and wounds?
Well that's nice but no sorry you will be poisoned, wounded and brutally maimed because you will be surrounded by enough enemies to nullify any resistance you have.
Over inflated boss and minion healthbars.
Have fun fighting them with your twigs and sticks because you do no significant damage.
Trying to use magic mid combat?
HA, imagine being so optimistic! You waste turns mid combat to do less damage than your melee counterparts, and that is assuming you survive long enough to even cast enough spells to empty your mana.
Trying to use buffs outside of combat?
How silly of you to think that adding points would make a SIGNIFICANT difference to any metric.
Play any other CRPG, it really is amazing how horrific combat is to experience. You have 0 control over who the enemies target. No taunt to allow your tanks to take all the damage. God save you if they do get targeted by every enemy because they will drop immediately anyway because this isn't a CRPG like Baldur's Gate where you can have enough armor class to dodge most attacks, you will get hit by almost everything and your defense will barely affect the damage you receive.
The only good thing about the stat system is maybe the skill checks for animal, plant lore and others like that because it is easy to grab a character like Prospector to cover the role for u the entire game and have dedicated team members for pickpocketing and other things. EVEN THEN other games do it better.
I made it past the dark forest and will continue to play it to the end (if I can keep my sanity).
I'm rage-quitting this game because of its egregious autosaving, or lack of. Most games that I have played will autosave whenever you fast travel, enter a dungeon, or complete some other milestone. Not so Drakensang. You will either mash the quicksave button constantly or you will die and lose hours of progress. I don't want to use my valuable time re-doing simple tasks that I've already done.
The game is not exceptional enough for me to continue playing it despite this problem. It feels like Dragon Age: Origins or Neverwinter Nights, but not as good. Everything just feels slow-paced. In Dragon Age: Origins, I felt like by the eight or ten hour mark I had a decent grasp of battle tactics and could "set up" a fight and adjust tactics accordingly. Here, there are no tactics, at least not in the early game. Battles are won by frenetically pausing after each enemy is killed so you can make everyone in your party target the next enemy. You have to do this manually because your friendly AI is incredibly dumb. I never figured out how to have a mage sit at the back and cast spells because every character in my party just wants to run headlong into the enemy. The Dark Eye roleplaying system is incredibly deep, and I never felt in my 8-10 hours playing this game that I was really using any of it. The story is classic generic fantasy, which I like, but it's not gripping enough to make me overlook all of the problems with this game.
If you want to get deep in the weeds of a combat system, I'd recommend Pathfinder: Kingmaker; if you want a more casual experience with an engaging story, I'd recommend Dragon Age: Origins. If you're a hardcore CRPG player who just has to play every CRPG/Real-Time-With-Pause game, and you've already played all the classics, then Drakensang might just be for you.
I hear the story is nice and but I will never get to enjoy it. Since I absolutely hate the chaotic combat. There are no tactics. Your characters do nothing other than a standard attack unless you explicitely tell them what to do. As a combat round is less than 2 seconds, get used to pressing pause issuing commands and immediately pressing pause again. All the while watching in shock as your chars run through enemies to attack the enemy right in front of them. It takes a quarter second to fill what is displayed in the combat log (so better get used to scrolling up all the time).
Such a shame since I quite like the system and levelling my characters. However, I simply can't bring myself to continue playing this game....
