Lured out of her solitude, Gloom Girl discovers a chamber containing DOOMBLADE: a sentient weapon, trapped and bound for eons. “Doom and Gloom” join forces and begin a quest to regain the blade’s powers and exact vengeance on its captors. 

 

 
Wielding DOOMBLADE, Gloom Girl can ride through the air to attack enemies. Target monsters to attack them directly, and slay them with DOOMBLADE’s wrath! 

 
 
The blade hungers for vengeance on the Dread Lords, who bound it in chains and stripped it of its powers. But first, it must regain its strength. Search for demonic shrines, where DOOMBLADE’s powers were hidden and stored by the long dead Gloomfolk, awaiting its return. Then use Doom Drop, Wicked Wind, and the Nightmare Onion to teach your enemies fear. 

 
 
From the abandoned halls of Gloomhaunt, into the New Wilderwood forest full of untrusting tribesmen, through the Molded Mines with their hedonistic shroom people, and into a technological hellscape known as the Power Sector. Gloom Girl must fight her way through these interconnecting worlds and destroy the monsters within as she hunts down the Dread Lords who imprisoned DOOMBLADE.

Awesome Game

Amazing quirky, but extremely well crafted, metroidvania where you play a non-human creature in a non-human world. The storytelling, music and atmosphere are absolutely exquisite. If you're expecting an uplifting story, this is not it. This is a tale of devastation and revenge. While the protagonist is silent, you'll get details about what happened though other speaking characters, 'monuments' and scrolls detailing various parts of the world. As you get more details, you'll likely share the protagonist's indignation and want revenge. The game does a good job at making you sorry for what happened to her world and there is definitely a social commentary buried under the game. There are various environments with unique terrain to navigate and a lot of creatures to tackles, each with a unique feel that are a natural fit for their environment. Everything is very organic in this game and flows very well together. Like any well crafted metroidvania, there is some backtracking to do as new abilities will unlock new areas of the map to explore. The protagonist's ability to attack and move by flying/ramming into select objects and opponents is rather unique and interesting which, combined with the alien organic feel of the world, contributes to give the game a very distinct feel. I started playing this game with a controller, then tried a mouse and I'll say that this is one of the very few games in this genre that will give you a superior experience with a keyboard and mouse I found. Clicking on things you want to ram into in quick succession works far better. I found the difficulty of the game well balanced. The game was not easy and I died my fair share, especially during boss fights, but even on the fights that I had to retry 5-10 times, I always felt I was not too far from winning and the next try would be the one. Assuming you can appreciate the "doom and gloom" theme of the game, I heavily recommend it. Its memorable and likely to leave a lasting impression.

Unique, but rough metroidvania

This is a game with a unique movement system, in which you can zip to enemies, which lets you fly and later even teleport through obstacles. It is a very nice mechanics which makes the game feel fresh in the metroidvania genre. It is also an impressive effort for a mainly 2 people studio. It is a pity some aspects of it are quite rough, which in latter potions of the game made me irritated: - There is a lot of backtracking which is tedious because quick travel system is badly designed. This game has very little direction so essentially each time you get new movement upgrade you need to look for all places where it can open something. There are many such places, most will be secrets not new areas. This is not unusual for metroidvanias, but having such huge swaths of map far away from quick travel spots (which by the way are not all connected, only some of them!) is not. Some spots developers surely knew will be visited often are fare away from this system... - Fights are sometimes very random. Often there are many enemies and where they are located directs your movement. Some boss phases with side mobs become trivial if you were lucky with mob movements, but nearly impossible otherwise. They also drop health randomly which also leads to severe fluctuations in difficulty. - Movement sometimes is tiresome. One of the mechanics is planting flowers at walls to zip to them. Very often you need to be quite precise in throwing them to be able to jump from them to the ledge up, so I needed to try few times to get over basic ledges in places where you need travel through over and over again. Similarly, when you learn dash up, in later zones there are many ledges which require it. The problem is, dash up is on cooldown and takes long time to perform. Using simple jumps or zipping is much more smooth and feels better. Anyway, I complain a lot as I want to be specific, but the rough parts are not majority of this game. I still had lot of fun.
