Looking for DOOM? look elsewhere.
The overall gameplay was fun (but repetitive) once you've found more weapons and upgrades, but for the first half of the game I was not enjoying the combat much. Also combat and exploration was dominated by animated interactions and glory kills which took control away from the player. Then all the platforming, challenges, upgrading and poor level layout just pulled the gameplay down. I didn't feel like I was playing a shooter any more, It felt more like an RPG, which I don't have a problem playing but when I play a shooter I want it to feel like a shooter. The story is a major fail for me. The doom slayer (the guy in this game) is not the doom marine (the guy from all other doom game before this). Also their story never pulled me in, just keep killing things and do what you are told and they'll give you some more of the story. It felt like you were there in the world while the creators poorly told a story happening around you, you were not driving the story forward in any way. The story also didn't make sense most of the time and I when I went back to try and figure it out it made even less sense. In the end, not having the doom guy being the last human survivor who puts his life and soul on the line to fight evil and stop the invasion, for me destroy the entire point of the story. It just felt like there was no sacrifice, tension or consequences in this so called 'DOOM'. So in the end Doom (2016) was a good looking game that had a few high moments in killing demons but was brought down by the endless jumping, upgrading, challenges, and failure at creating a good story to wrap around the Doom franchise.

Turbo Overkill, Doom Eternal, then 2016
Yep, the title are my sentiments. DOOM 2016 is worth the $20 (USD) price, and even better on sale, but Doom Eternal is the better of the two and Turbo Overkill actually bests Doom Eternal. Go ahead and hurl tomatoes at my review. Upon its release, DOOM 2016 was a fantastic reboot of a classic series that made FPSes a staple of gaming. Incredible production values? Check. Refined, more modern mechanics? Check. Emmersive environments? Big ol' check. Check. An expansion on the Doom series lore? Check. Important boxes were ticked. On the critical side: the movement wasn't as fast as what we'd grown accustommed to in series like Unreal Tournament or Left 4 Dead and the environments were rather linear. These issues would be rectified in 2020's Doom Eternal, and indie FPSes like Turbo Overkill and Trepang2 would expand upon such features. As a result, in 2025, I can't shower DOOM 2016 with the sort of praise I would have in 2016. All-in-all, DOOM 2016 without DRM is worthy of owning at $20 or less. But don't expect to be as entertained by it as the Turbo Overkills and Trepang2s that're now the standard.

i am so happy i paid 4 dollars and not a cent more. all the visuals, gun animations, music cannot distract from fundamentally broken, lazy, and most of all, boring game play. boring characters. boring audio tapes. biggest sin: difficulty does not matter in the slightest.

Dont get the hype
I bought it once it came to GoG and played it for the first time. I was exited becasue everyone was talking how great it is nad...I just dont see it. It is really bad shooter in my opinion. It is extremly long coridor berween boaring arenas. Most weapons are boaring and ammo is so limited that you cannot use the few that re fun. The execution animation are fun...for the first time, but you have to use them a lot, becasue there is extremly limited way how to restock on ammo. I cannot find a single think positive on this game. I will stick to Brutal doom.
