Story Driven RPG is back
I only have good things to say about Disco Elysium, amazing dialog, great characters. Engaging from start to finish. You will laugh, cry, be angry and also hate dice. This game allows and rewards you to fail which makes it almost unique. Play this!

Pretty Good
I haven't finished the game yet, it's pretty good but I guess due to all the great reviews I've read I was expecting something a little better than what I've seen so far. The writing is very... interesting, half the conversations I've had have been with myself, which is a bit awkward, and personally I find the main character hard to relate to or even like so far. It's good enough to keep me playing. Pros: * Variety of interesting characters. * Good Music. * Some of the quests are fun (however some are also mundane) * Great Dialogue options, you can do some crazy stuff and seeing how the characters react is great. Cons: * Point and click navigation - Not a fan. You spend significant time watching your guy walk between waypoints, and it can be hard to click where you want while the screen is scrolling, so it ends up being a lot of stop and go and pixel hunting. There are at least markers over a lot of areas of interest to make them easier to find, but you don't get that with items you can pick up or interact with. * Limited voice acting - I'd guess only about 1/3rd of the dialogue has spoken audio, generally the beginning threads of conversations you'll have with a character will be spoken, then it just stops and you're left reading the rest. * Loading Screens - It takes an extra several seconds to transition into or out of most buildings due to them. Given the art style and limited audio I'm wondering why are these necessary, it feels like the entirety of this game's resources could probably fit in RAM on modern computers. On the bright side some helpful tips do come up during them. Tips: * You don't need to save before exiting to menu, the game will autosave. I don't recall it mentioning that it does this, but it's happened for me every time so far. * Double-click somewhere to run there instead of walk, saves time navigating. Unfortunately this only came up as a loading screen tip after several hours of me (not) enjoying walking speed. :(

The True Successor to Planescape Torment
My new favorite RPG. If you play games for the story, I can't imagine how you wouldn't love Disco Elysium. The setting isn't elves and dragons; the characters aren't the chosen ones. Saying what Disco Elysium isn't is far easier than saying what it is. I will say this: it's smart and mature. It's not afraid to wave dangerous ideologies or thoughts around like a loaded weapon. I played the whole game as a neo-Nazi conspiracy theorist who hated women. At no point did the game put up the guard rails and stop me, but neither did it take a sick pleasure in how I treated minorities or women. A few people agreed with me but many people hated me. My partner had respect for how I did my job, but vocalized his disagreement. There is no gamedev moral high ground. There are people in the world, you're one with more power than most, and there are consequences for your actions. The game loves to remind you that you're just a person with a badge. It's not afraid to make the player feel impotent. You will not see 100% of everything on one playthrough; you will not pass important checks. Thank God. Sometimes failing an important check is better than succeeding. I did karaoke... poorly. But my partner liked the raw emotion of me screaming in the mic. He respected me for giving it my all, despite being technically horrible. He even defended me. Was he lying? Not even a little. Come to think of it, there's a lot of bad singers I like in real life too. There's little human moments like that that make Disco feel real, and not just a theme park for the player. The different stats do a lot more than influence success/failure checks like these though. Their main function is to offer internal dialogue between the different personalities in the protag's head. Often hilarious, occasionally insightful, you interact with the world of Disco Elysium like a real person: through their senses, thoughts, perceptions, etc. I could go on forever about this game, but there's a word limit. Buy it.

Wonderfully ctafted story!
This one is an absolute must play for anyone who loved games like Planescape Torment. The world is small but incredibly detailed and rewards you greatly for combing through it carefully. There is so much to discover and some quests I thought to be a red herring turned out to have great impacts. The story is masterfully crafted and deep in their exploration of philosophy, politics and the history of this wonderfullyinteresting setting. Your decisions actually do have meaning and not in the lame way many other games try too. The characters are memorable and interesting and you really get to know their flaws, their hopes and dreams and it does a brilliant job of creating moral ambiguity and I found myself really caring about the characters. This is a thinking person's game not a brainless looter shooter but it is an amazing work of art I will remember long after I forget the latest FPS title like other classics I have fond memories of such as Baldur's Gate or Planescape Torment which I still find myself returning to all these years later.

Top 10 CRPG's
If you enjoy CRPG's with excellent writing, immersive world-building, and revolutionary narrative structure, then look no further. I've been a CRPG afficionado for around 3 decades, and this game might crack my top 5 (for reference, the others would probably be BG2, Planescape:Torment, Witcher 3, Fallout 2, but that's just off the top of my head, don't hold me to it). Probably my only real criticism is the lack of fully-voiced characters. While some lines are (wonderfully) voiced, the majority of the dialogue is not; you will have to read to enjoy this game. One more caveat: while you have a great deal of control over character development, you are locked into playing a male. If you can get past these quibbles, you have a real gem in store for you.
