Under-appreciated sequel

I'm going to assume you've played or plan to play the original Deus EX. The fact is Deux EX 2 was a disappointment to many back in the day. When I first played it back a little while after it had come out (patched), I was disappointed with how the game looked and felt. But only for the first few minutes. As I continued playing I quickly realized that it was still a really fun game even if it was stuck in the shadow of it's prequel. People talking about how much they hate it are upset that it is not more like the first game. But the truth is the sequel actually excels in some areas more than the original. Basically if you liked the first one than you really should have fun playing this one. It focuses more on story and choices. It offers less freedom and has a lighter tone but it is still very much a Deus EX game. Don't miss out on this great game because some old gamers are still bitter that the sequel deviated from the first game and was less hardcore than they'd have liked it to be. This game stuck with me as one of those great games I'll never forget. Like Knights of the Old Republic, Beyond Good and Evil, and the Half Life series, etc. The first game is better in many ways than the second. And I would rate it higher. And yet I can't honestly say that it is flat out better than the second. And the newer game (Human Revolution) is even better. And yet it is still missing something that the first game had... Bottom line. Every Deus EX game that has been released has been very good. (never played the mobile one) I highly recommend this game. Hopefully the fourth game will continue this streak of greatness.

Give it a deserved chance!

(If you can overcome the old graphics) Try this game. Play it for what it is, regardless of others in the series. It's got a firm and interesting story and many ways to get somewhere. Don' t judge it as a sequel. You won't regret it.

It's actually a fun game

Far from flawless, and it's obvious why many people despise it for being a Deus Ex game. Even if you don't have negative biases, there are quite some design issues and awkward solutions here - but a lot of charm as well. Give it a chance when it's discounted - you may end up positively surprised.

Inferior sequel, but not a bad game

Deus Ex 2: Invisible War is story-wise, the final part of the Deus Ex series. Despite the hate, I still find this game quite okay and enjoyable to play. Non-lethal knockouts are easier than the first game, and they work mid-combat which is a really fun thing. You play as either a male or female Alex D, a Denton clone caught in a crossfire between factions who want to control the world. You can help whoever you want, even all, it won't lock you out until near the end. Even the most hardcore Deus Ex fans would agree this game is a step-down. It's made for console, which means many limitations. The maps are very small and claustrophobic, unlike the big open areas of the first game, which feels more like alleys and hallways rather than a proper city or building. There's no code-entering function like the first game, instead you have to find the code somewhere or use a multitool for keypads. Story also feels kinda shallow, the levels felt plain, lacking variation and color. It's a shame, because if the world here was properly developed, it could rival the other DX games. The biggest problem of this game, though, is not the game itself, but rather the optimization. You can install the Visible Upgrade mod to have proper widescreen, but the game still lags and crashes when loading from time to time, and reinstalling the mod seems to be the only fix if your game always loads to a black screen. Even despite its flaws, I think Deus Ex 2: Invisible War is still worth a try if you love the franchise, or cyberpunk in general.

Underrated game.

The Gamers™ didn't give the game credit where it's due. They judged the game for what it wasn't instead of what it is. Deus Ex: IW didn't age as badly as it's predecessor so it was easier for me to get into. The story is well written with choices and consequences. The levels are well crafted with flexible gameplay. The graphics still looks good and the soundtrack is very atmospheric (The main theme 🔥). I found the very game very immersive. The load times were quite annoying but apart from that I enjoyed the experience.
