Opis
Quietly released by SSI in 1986 and 1987 were 2 PC conversions of their classic Apple II RPGs: Demon's Winter and The Shard of Spring. Both games are solid "conventional" RPGs (i.e. top-down view, lots of loot and monsters) which emphasizes level advancement and typical "kill the big foozle" endgame.
In Demon's Winter, you must search the lands and seas for spells to trap the demon-god Malifon and undo his mystical curse. Entertaining and very well-written, if not revolutionary.

Some cool ideas, questionable execution
Beat this earlier this year, here's my 5 cents: Pros: * You have a lot of freedom to explore the world, there are very few gated sections * You can enchant your equipment, and this is one of the earliest games I can remember with such an option Cons: * You only have one save, so you have to back up the save file manually or adjust your play style accordingly * While you have the freedom to learn any skill for any class, most skills are either useless or too expensive for you to actually play with builds to any real degree. This is especially true considering you gain 3 stat points that are randomly allocated on each level up, which means you do not have any reliable way to get Intellect either without savescumming * You only recover 5 spell points (SP) per day in this game (10 if you pay to rest at inns) so it's not practical to spend SP in battle on damage, which results in your casters acting as healbots * Enemies don't need to worry about their SP (of course), which results in you take unavoidable damage from them spamming damage spells, or worse, insta-kills or paralysis, which can happen fairly early too due to their magic system * Paralysis lasts until cured, and there are three different forms of it, which supposedly requires different spells to cure them (Melt for Freeze, etc), though they all just show as Bind. And if they happen to land the Bind on the character that can cure it, tough luck. The unbinding spells aren't guaranteed to work either. * You can only enchant specific items with specific spells, and in specific ways. For example, if you want Heal to be cast X times a day, you need to find a ring or a medallion. These items are not available in shops, so you can only buy them from merchants as you roam the land. This means you need to get pretty lucky to find these things. Summary * Average game, perhaps worth trying on sale. Do note that there is no auto-combat here, unlike what is stated in somosdios' review.

A Great SSI Classic
I had an Atari 1040ST growing up and we collected a LOT of SSI games, including this one (the Phantasie series will always hold a very special place in my heart). SSI games are always worth a play and this one is no different. Combat is a bit tedious, but it gives you the option to "auto combat" if you don't want to micro manage everything, which as a child was NOT something I wanted to do (also as an adult it's not something I'm seriously interested in [except for certain important battles that you'll want to micro], as I played this game again a few years ago). I never did finish it, so I actually cant' speak to the entirety of the game, I just remember really enjoying playing what I did play and figuring out how this game works. I used to watch my father play this (I'm pretty sure he finished it) as his attention span was much greater than mine at the time, and the style of this game kind of demands patience (it has that original Ultima look, which I was never really a big fan of, especially after playing Dungeon Master, and being a child who liked pretty games). I did find that the raw graphical style grew on me as I deepened my interest and understanding of the game.

that's a good old game
Character creation and combats are top, lots of classes and races with similar to gold box combat, but it's not add, it's completly new with specific monsters, spells, invocations etc etc. I found it very interesting and very refreshing. Exploration of the world: you are definitly free, you'll roam land and water (and in my memory water fights weren't bad). First time i played i litteraly skipped the firsts dungeons and found, after lots of roaming a later (in the normal order) dungeon, and still was able to finish the game. The world is big, some nice encounters and great descriptions and cherry on top of the icing of the cake, you can craft (or pay someone to do it) the weapons of your choice, why was it possible in a 1980's era game and not found anywhere now???why??? This feature was so good, you find an antic and lost dwarf artisan city and they are able to craft the best weapons if you can afford. Conclusion: it's a very good game despite outdated graphics (if the pics presented in the description doesn't pull you off, go for it ;) )

Demon's Winter Review
Really an excellent open-world game. You're free to make the party you want to make and wander into areas you're not prepared for if you want to. Coming up on 30 years later though, this should be freeware, unless the original devs or their families are getting money from it.
