It would be an enjoyable casual game if it actually worked. The game can crash every single turn... It is very annoying. There are too many assasination attempts. It is virtually impossible to bankrupt. I was able to gain over 90% removing all taxes and (at the same time) creating generous social programs. While cerains groups did not like 'debt crisis' I could not default :) One may amass debt perpetually.
For the third time we delve into the complex, interrelated issues that plague all politicians, forcing you to carefully balance existing issues with the need for reform.
Alas, little has changed since the predecessors. Again, you move sliders, click through vast tables, fight off the urge to tear your hair out at the sight of yet more information that may or may not important for your decision-making task at hand. If nothing else, Democracy 3 will reflect the infuriating difficulty of weighing popular opinion against neccessary choices. Do you raise taxes in order to fund an important new law that will greatly decrease pollution? What about your failing infrastructure, education or unemployment? Come election time, your efforts will likely be ignored and condemned for these dreaded taxes.
No, Democracy won't really surprise you in that regard or, in fact, in any other. You are strictly limited to a two-party 'democratic' system that is eerily fashioned after the United States of America of present times. There is no real opposition here or dynamic events that might shake things up proper, you merely play with yourself against turn countdowns and voter approval.
Positech should have taken inspiration from more interesting - and stable - multi-party systems such as that of Sweden, Denmark, Germany, France or successful non-European nations such as Japan, India or even Indonesia in order to break away from the binary, black-and-white ordeal that is this game.
The interface once you are used to it is very easy and informative.
It is important to understand there are no easy or quick fixes every action has a reaction this will allow you to successfully manage your chosen country.
However, there are some problems if you choose to play in certain ways.
If you want to play your own country to reflect real current politics it does not really work properly.
The electorates’ opinions are constantly in a state of flux as new information is made available and yet there is no option to make changes to certain initial policy popularity ratings.
For example bio fuels have become controversial but, are given an automatic public policy support rating of about 70% it would be great if there were sliders for setting such ratings to reflect current opinion.
You sometimes need to expend points to achieve realism.
Play it as an imaginary political situation not as real life.
A good and addictive game but, I feel that there should be far more options to manipulate the realism of the game for those that want to play as their country’s leader on a reasonably accurate model of today’s ever changing political stage.
You could be leader of any country you wanted real or imaginary if you had the ability to set up all your own political parameters but, maybe that would not be a viable cost or programming option.
This is a good idea but poorly executed. I've enjoyed previous Democracy games but this version has a game breaking bug when starting a new game that makes it impossible to enjoy. You start every new game with zero political party support, and I mean zero. In fact, the entire population is a member of the opposition party. You get zero members, zero activists, and the opposition gets 100% members and activists. Your overall popularity might start at 3% max and will be almost impossible to get up without cheats.
After doing a little research I found on the game's website an active forum post that goes back over a year where the developer refused to acknowledge this is a bug despite many users providing screenshots and feedback about it.
There is a text file you can edit in the game folders where you can get party membership to change, but it also makes the game unstable and you will see your popularity go from 30% to 60% in one turn then fall to 20% the next turn.
If this bug ever gets fixed this is easily a 4 star game. Having this kind of bug at start, and what looks like no support from the developer for over a year gets this a 1 star.
Democracy 3 let's you manage one of six western countries by carefully (or not so carfully) adjusting a multitude of screws like taxes, grants and laws (you can even adjust the drinking age) that all influce each other in multiple ways. Each descision may have a positive or negative effect on your popularity with different groups of voters and at the end of the term there is of course an election.
The strong point of this game is it's powerful interface that somehow achieves to display all these complex interactions in a very clear and intuitive way, always allowing the player to make informed decisions. However there is a surprisingly little amount of politic involved in running your country . You do have a cabinet but that feature feels rather like an afterthought than an essential part of the game and can be largely ignored without any real consequences. The ability to hold Speeches and perform PR-Stunts (or have any election battle at all for that matter) is outsourced to a DLC and even then it's not much.
With only six countries to choose from, you'd expect the developers did extensive research to simulate reality as accurate as possible but you'd better think again: I started with germany which had a credit rating of only "B" and was plagued by ongoing street riots. Definitely not the country I'm living in but at least no spreading diseases like in Canada where you also magically got elected with zero members in your party. Despite all those artificial obstacles the game is pretty easy once you figured it out and election results of 90%+ are quite common from that point onwards.
All in all Democracy is a nice little game for in between but leaves a lot to be desired in regards to content and polishment. Get it on discount if you're intrested in, as it's not really worth the full price in my opinion.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
