Defender's Quest
Opis
Things were going well for Azra, the sheltered Royal Librarian. There were books to sort, dust, and put away, important royal documents to transcribe. All this was swept away by the deadly plague that devastated the Kingdom of Ash. The plague killed quickly, so quickly that no one has the time to bury the dead, instead they are thrown, without ceremony, into the Pit. Azra, infected with the plague, is cast into the Pit. Soon, she finds herself in the Half-Way World, the place between life and death and learns of her true power--that of being able to bring anyone into the Half-Way World with her. Now, she must traverse the Pit in the hopes of finding the cause of the plague and must fight to not only save herself but the Kingdom as well.
Defender’s Quest is a tower defense and RPG hybrid that features classic tower defense gameplay intermingled with RPG mechanics. Recruit your troops and pick the ones that best fit your needs as you’ll have a wide variety to choose from: berserkers, archers, healers, mages, and many more. Upgrade their skills, items, and abilities and watch your party grow in power.

Worst of Both Worlds
This game claims to be both a RPG and a Tower Defense game. It doesn't do either of these particularly well. In the end, Defender's Quest commited the cardinal sin of games: it failed to entertain me.

Poor execution of a decent concept.
The idea of combining tower defense and RPG elements sounded like a dream combination to me. Actually, it still does, but Defender's Quest is not the game to deliver it. The biggest problem here is that there's no challenge to this game whatsoever. Once you know how to beat a level, you can do this over and over again (which can take under 30 seconds) to farm XP insanely quickly. To make this even more absurd, you get to decide how much XP you get! There may as well be a checkbox labeled "WIN NOW." From a technical standpoint, the graphics are a little bland and the music fairly generic. The cutscenes feature large, awkward renditions of your in-game characters that resemble something from a Facebook game. The "story" (driven by amateurish dialogue sequences in these cutscenes) would had been better told via the in-game sprites. Not a good game, but I'd be interested in a sequel.

Locks up Windows 7
Took several minutes to get through the initial cutscenes - long waits when going to the next frame in the story. Then locked up completely after starting first level (nothing after optimistically waiting 5 minutes).

WARNING!
This package does the following: 1) Installs Adobe Air on your system, opening up an attack vector 2) Phones home whenever it senses an internet connection 3) Opts you into unspecified "Data Tracking" (can opt out in Options, but doesn't stop it from phoning home) Shame on GOG for not disclosing any of this.
