Defender's Quest

Tower Defense and RPG mash up. Instead of towers you setup characters on the maps. Compared to tower defense games(TD), you usually field less characters. You start with only one character (tower) and by the end of the campaign my party had 16 characters. However you can have a larger party if you want. You cannot modify the ennemies paths like in many TD. Overall this make for limited strategies compared to TD. What the game lacks for in strategy it makes it back in the RPG area. Although you have less towers, they are actually full RPG characters that are each able to level up, upgrade and equips in various ways. Which opens for a good level of customization to suit your strategy. In the end you get much more attached to your charachters than to typical towers of TD. A nice feature is the possibility to reassign you characters skill points as the game move forward. this is really useful. Cut scenes between each level unveil the story. They are well done and funny, and really add depth to the charachters and to the campaign. Technically the game isn't impressive, nevertheless the engine and UI does a decent job at supporting the gameplay. Overall, altough the game looks like just another indie casual, it actually delivers and. I really enjoyed it, however this is not the Game Of The Year. Good value if you get a reduced price.

I downloaded this as I fancied trying something new. It is an incredibly simple game to learn and play. You can plan your strategy out beforehand, or pause the game and move people around (or do it realtime). I love the fact that as you get more people, you can go back to old battles and try the harder level to see whether you can complete it. It is one of those games where you just have to play the next level, I have trouble putting it down.

I'm not a big fan of tower defense. In truth, none of them has been fun for me so far, it felt always too repetitive and boring after a while. Defender's quest is a bright star among other tower defense games. I liked it basically since the first second. The story is nice and funny and what's most important, the gameplay itself is a big fun as well. Unlike other games, this one is getting better and better as you progress. While very simple in the beginning, during the time new heroes are unlocked, new spells are unlocked and also new abilities for the heroes. This actually really forces you to think when to boost whom, when spend PSI power for a needed spell etc. I strongly recommend this game to anyone.

The title says it all - Defender's Quest is the best game I've played in a while. I picked it up during the GOG summer sale (along with a dozen other titles) and it is by far the most fun - and there were several other very good games in there as well. Why it's good: it has the best features of a tower defense game, a tactical game, and an RPG. I was fondly reminded of Jeanne d'Arc (one of my favorite tactics games) by both the plot and level system. As for the tower defense aspect, it is one of the best I have ever played. The six tower 'classes' are each useful (and get more useful as they level up). There is no one "must use" class, and even my personal favorite (ranger) can't solo a battle. Making more challenging versions of the battles immediately available means that you can always find a way to challenge yourself, and new game + mode takes that to another level, presenting hair-tearingly difficult challenges to overcome. An incredible game overall. Five stars. I can't wait for Defender's Quest 2.

The game has potential, but the gameplay is really flawed. The upgrade "trees" are nonsense, you it gives you the illision of choice. And the overall gameplay isn't that hard, you just kind of let it go forward. I wanted to like this game, but it's just not good.
