In this remarkable kingdom simulator, your goal is to become Emperor by building and expanding your stronghold in competition against opposing computer-controlled kingdoms. Choose three courses of action to achieve Emperor status: Lawful (Maximizing the prosperity and morale of your poulace; Chaotic (total military victory over all your enemies); or Neutral (striving to achieve both objectives, the toughest challenge of all).
All the details of running a kingdom must be dealt with: Construction, farmland, population, housing, troops, morale and changing seasons - and, of course, a multitude of D&D game monsters. Micro-manage all these factors personally if you want absolute control, or let the computer do much of it for you. Choose from pre-created worlds or computer-generated random scenarios for a new challenge every time. With the intuitive mouse-driven command interface, running your own kingdom has never been more fun, fast or easy!

Stronghold is a city builder game using mechanics found in the Dungeons and Dragons Rules Cyclopedia, centered on Mass Combat and Strongholds/Land Management. Sure, the game is clunky and the $6 price is a bit... off, however, for 93, the game is quite unique. If you are looking for something to sink hours in and are curious about it, get it. It does live up to the $6 in the long run.
Back when I was 11 my older brother bought a computer and let me play on it. This was my first strategy game and introduction to D&D. I've looked for it on and off for the past 25 years. Never really having much luck as I wasn't 100% sure of the name. I had no idea what I was doing while playing it but I had a blast that's for sure. Well thanks to GOG here it is, it's clunky and shows it's age for sure, but the memories it's brings back are worth the $5 price tag. The people complaining that's it's $5 are crazy, The effort to build the store page and port these games to make them work on modern computers alone is well worth it. Plus it's on sale for less then $2 right now, so if $5 is too much then wait for a sale.
This game was released in 1993, it's 13MB - It's still one of the best city building / resource management games I've ever played. Mindblowing, total gem of a game.
This game is only the 1.00 version. The 1.00 version was bugged and needs the 1.01 version to be playable. Unfortunately this is not available from GOG at this time.
Most D&D-based games have you creating a party of adventurers who then go out on adventures, slay monsters, and complete quests. Stronghold has you start out creating a party of leaders instead, who have embarked on a journey to settle a new land.
They will recruit new followers, build up castles, homes, farms, training halls, and smithies, and then eventually those followers will have the experience and the numbers needed to take on deadly monsters and their nests!
This was one of the first games to have a strategic vision where your units aren't directly controlled by you. Instead, you give more general orders and your units fulfill them as they are able. You'll manage the gold and food for each of your factions, tell them what to build and where, and tell them how much time they'll dedicate to building, recruiting, and training. It's a fun concept with a great soundtrack, definitely worth a play-through.
After the first few plays, the game gets quite repetitive and it's time to do something else, but the music is enjoyable, the monsters your characters face are a wide variety, and it's fun to watch battles play out. I wish more games had done this concept at all, there's barely anything else that's ever come close.
