You come back from work hoping to get a good night's sleep but then you notice light blinking on your answering machine. It was your brother – an architect redeveloping an old train station and hotel. He called to ask for your help. Alarmed by his frightened voice, cryptic information about some disappearance and strange whispers in the background you board a train without hesitation. From now on your adventure has just begun and soon you will realize that although no one is there, you are not alone...
This Myst-style horror-adventure game will bring fear into your heart. From the very beginning you are exposed to an overwhelming but invisible ghost presence – strange calls, footsteps, voices from nowhere. In order to help your brother and survive you will need to solve the mystery of this abandoned, haunted place. And remember! Do not let it to find you! Do not let it to find you... Do not.. The game is best played in a dark room with your speakers turned up. Unless you're scared, of course.

Any horror fan, any mystery fan, point-and-click fan, whatever categories this game falls into, if you're a fan of it, Dark Fall is an experience. The tension's not the only thing that'll keep you up at night, the puzzles are inventive and will keep you mystified long into the night. Satisfying. And the setting is perfectly unsettling, you find yourself wandering this horrible deserted train station and annexed hotel, it's inhabitants, like the buildings they lived in, are buried alive by decay and frozen in time and they're calling out to you. The only thing you need to worry about this game is have you the balls and the brains to finish it? Worth every penny.
Great atmosphere, start of the story and graphics, but I'm simply too scared to continue it. I guess if you love the genre this is for you. For me it was a try-out of the genre and I can't say I enjoyed it, even something silly liike opening my fridge became a problem right after playing this. The only reason why I didn't uninstall it is because I'm afraid of the spritis who will haunt me if I do so.
I gave minus one star not because I don't like the genre, but because I did think the voice acting (the brother on the phone and Timothy Pike) were quite bad.
I really enjoyed the Lost Crown (same game designer/creator) so I gave this game a try. It was a mistake. This game is tedious. The setting is good (a haunted hotel) and there are some haunting sounds and visuals here and there, but the storyline is boring (reading countless notes about/between people who died 50+ years ago to figure out what evil presence lurks), and puzzles that just don't make sense most of the time.
You never know where you should go or why, or at what point in the storyline. There are MANY hotel rooms to look through, but most won't even factor into the gameplay ultimately and are a complete waste of time to explore, but YOU don't know that, because you can look closely at different items that ultimately you can't use. There are symbols galore everywhere, allusions to mysterious things, etc. but again, you don't know what to do next or why you should do it. You will need the walkthrough a lot, because, no joke, you won't get a clue you need unless you click a screwdriver to the left and right a certain number of times (how the heck are you supposed to "learn" that you should do that??? It's not in any note anywhere). Another time, you won't get a clue if you play the right tune on a record but then don't turn up the volume to the maximum level. It has to be perfectly done or won't happen. These are the kinds of maddening puzzles you'll encounter in this tedious game.
After about 4-6 hours of gameplay, I completely gave up and used the walkthough to get it over with because I got stuck so many times. When I saw how ridiculous some of the puzzles were to solve, I got more upset about how this game operates. It just isn't intuitive at all. It's like Myst--you throw a person into a weird world and they just explore all they want but never really get anywhere without cheats and hints because there's no linear way to solve things and no clues about what to do.
Not a fan of this game at all. The two stars are for the creepiness of the vibe.
I love scary movies but for some reason horror survival games just stress me out. This game was a perfect compromise for someone like me. From the first moment of the game, you're totally immersed in the setting - a creepy old hotel and station - but there are no timed events, no in game death (at least not that I encountered) and essentially no jump scares.
The whole thing takes place in one night (I actually played most of it in one rainy evening for ambience) and in the one location. For some that might be a drawback, but for me it really helped set the tone and I liked getting to explore the rooms in any order and at my own pace. There are only a couple rooms that are initially locked so you have the run of the place almost from frame one.
The puzzles are a combination of object related, finding clues and solving riddles with only about seven useable items in the whole game. I'll admit I used a walkthrough for a couple runes I was stumped on, but they were always something I probably could have gotten if I'd been a bit more patient, rather than one of those "I NEVER would have gotten that" moments.
The absolute best part of this game for me was getting immersed in the lives of the various characters (aka trapped souls). I loved reading the old letters and journals, hearing their voices, and gradually teasing apart what happened on that fateful night the Dark Fall was released. I have a really hard time finishing games but this one kept my attention for the whole 7 hour runtime.
I never heard of this when it came out, so playing this through non-nostalgic 2022 glasses I can say that the graphics are decent, navigation is straight forward (mouse clicks) and I had no trouble running it on a modern gaming PC. There is the expected pixel hunting but no frustrating moments.
If you like spooky games, point and click, or old fashioned mysteries with lots to sift through and the need to take your own notes, then you will love this title. I know I did!
I had a copy of this game as a kid gifted by a relative, and was playing it on heavily abused Pentium III PC. We had this PC in my village house, which was in the area of constant power surges when there is bad weather.
One of my most vivid teenage memories (was 15 or 16) is playing this game on that old PC during the night of terrible storm where I decided to stay for a weekend alone. I was playing it around 2am while the most awful stormy wind was howling outside. I remember in game going to 3rd floor of the hotel (in game), in the side area romiging, then going back towards the doors, when doors opened on their own; lighting hit outside and power went out (in real life).
I crapped my pants. Slept with a knife under a pillow that night. Was afraid to go to the bathroom for a piss.
