In 2455 A.D. , Kage Hishima used the magical powers of the Daikatana, the most powerful sword ever forged, to alter time and establish himself as supreme ruler. You are Hiro Miyamoto, one of the few people on Earth who remembers what really happened. The burden of saving the world, your version of it, has fallen unto your shoulders. You’re not alone as your friends, Superfly Johnson and Mikiko Ebihara, travel by your side. You must gather weapons, overcome all obstacles, discover deviously concealed secrets, and battle a bewildering array of foes. Use your resources wisely as you’ll need all the help you can get. Are You Ready?!
From the rock star designer, John Romero, comes the legendary, in more ways than one, Daikatana (“long sword” in Japanese). Run ‘n’ gun is the norm here as you blast your enemies to oblivion with over 24 glorious, bad ass weapons. On top of the sweet, sweet guns, you are armed with the Daikatana--a weapon that grows in power the more you use it. Go on a wild time-tripping ride and make your enemies “Suck It Down!”
Wreak temporal havoc in 4 distinct time periods: ancient Greece, medieval Norway, near-future San Francisco, and high-tech Japan in 2455.
Incredible sidekicks as they provide cover fire, watch your back, and provide helpful feedback to assist you in your mission.
Pulse-pounding multiplayer action with two equally exciting modes of play: classic Deathmatch and Jewel Quest, a variant of capture the flag.
Throwback Thursday Recommendation
We share the earnest reasons that make a classic game so dear to us!
Recommended by Kilg0re, Stream Team: Daikatana is an underrated game in my opinion, that has an undeserved reputation for being a "bad" game. Though it certainly has it's janky issues, and there were many issues on release, there is a lot of fun to be had here. IMO, once you get past the drab, grindy opening episode (which is the one most people played in the shareware demo), the game really opens up in terms of graphics and level design. The John Romero approved community patch makes it much more playable on modern PCs, and I think even if it's not a bona fide masterpiece, when all is said and done, it's an ambitious fun experience.

Don't bother, there's a reason why this game is famous, and it's because it's really bad.
It wasn't worth its price back in the day, and it still isn't.
Of course, it isn't as bad as some other games, but does that mean you should buy it ? No. Not at 5,99$.
Maybe if you found it around 1 or 2$, i would rate it higher, but keep in mind you won't have fun with the game.
I'd rather recommend playing good old quake II instead, or really any other good FPS.
The design of this is quite solid, save for the sidekicks. The level design is great and well paced and the combat is very, very satisfying and fun. Truely, if there were some way to just turn off your sidekicks, or if they behaved better, this game would have been remembered as a true classic.
Do a search for Daikatana at the Internet Archive. You know, that place with the Wayback Machine. Turns out, they host things besides your old Angelfire and Geocities web sites. The first result, the one attributed to Proteus4994 and Suspicious, is the one you want.
You don't need to play this game because those two foolish men from the internet have done it for you. They're like Jesus but instead of dying for our sins they played a bad video game. I'm pretty sure Daikatana came from a pact with Satan so it's actually a genius metaphor when you think about it.*
*No it's not. That metaphor is like the weapons in this game. Stupid, barely functional and will probably end up being the cause of my death.
Honestly Daikatana is trash and the only reasons why I played it is because John Romero was part of its development and because I watched that old LP from Proteus and Suspicious eons ago. Yeah this is not a good game, but it is the best thing to mod since there are mod tools out there for it. Making the game dumber is the only way to "dull the pain" of playing Daikatana. This game is just anime fanfiction and making it more of an abomination is the only thing that makes it funny or even slightly redeemable. Not to mention the AI assistants, can't leave without your buddy Superfly who is stuck running into a wall for all eternity or trying to invent new ways to speedrun his own life. I am forgiving of the fact that this game does not look that great and other games that didn't look good even for their time, but wow the art style is trash and everything is green. I learned that green is Romero's favorite colour and that this is one of few games where green water doesn't hurt you. Only play this to mod it, if you want to seriously play it just watch the old Proteus LP which has been re-uploaded on youtube in glorious 240p.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
