Opis
1997, Los Angeles. A mass murder has taken place in a hospital. The criminal is the director of the hospital, Richter Harris. He is one of America's best-known doctors, a quiet and studious man. Suddenly transformed into a mass murderer, Richter has seized a large number of hostages and barricaded himself in the hospital where the police cannot reach him. His daughter Laura hears the news and immediately drives to Los Angeles to find out what it is that made his father a murderer. Reaching the scene of the tragedy she prepares to enter the hospital...

D stands for "Don't bother"
D is the tale of one Laura Harris, whose father has gone crazy and started murdering people. It's up to her to defuse the situation before something even worse happens. Born from the twisted mind of Kenji Eno, D is one of the most famous games from the FMV era! Well, I say that, but the game doesn't really have the markings of a masterpiece or even a cult classic. I assume everybody knows about D because of three things: its first person FMV gameplay, Kenji Eno's name, and its time limit mechanic which only gives you 2 hours and no saves to finish the game. But in truth, as it's very short and the solutions are almost all blatantly obvious, that should be enough time for most players. I finished with 15 minutes to spare (even got the good ending!) and never had to check any guides. But there are two problems: Laura moves as slowly as a petrified snail, and some of the puzzles seem specifically designed to waste your time with long FMVs. These issues mean that the game is more likely to frustrate the player rather than making him feel more immersed. I could shake my head and wonder about how it's a shame that such an interesting premise and story got bogged down by questionable gameplay choices.... but let's face it, even the story is laughable. Without spoiling anything, let's say that the big reveal had me roll my eyes in a mixture of disbelief and laughter. For a horror game, that's probably not a good thing. There were several versions of the game, including PS1, Saturn and 3DO, but the PC version got stuck with low resolution, scanlined videos. And since the game is entirely videos, I don't have to tell you how much that sucks. Overall, perfectly skippable. If you want to experience Kenji Eno's weird ideas, you are better off picking up Enemy Zero, which is superior in every way. If you want a more interesting first person FMV game, Mansion of Hidden Souls for the Mega CD is a far more charming effort even with all its issues. No reason to return to D today.

A $5 Trip Down Memory Lane
(Disclaimer: I haven't played the GOG version.) Ah, this takes me back. Sitting in my first apartment, playing the Playstation 1. It's easy to forget how much of a leap that era was for video games... Games like D and Resident Evil were coming out and giving gamers visuals and experiences they hadn't had before. This game is all about the spooky. The game is made of pre-rendered 3D. You basically go around a "hospital" which, if I remember right, just looks like a house. The gameplay is in first person, and revolves around interacting with things in the environment, as well as some light puzzle solving. Animated 3D cutscenes progress the story. To current eyes, the models and animation are atrocious, but back then - they were good. One thing I remember is that the game is deliberately slow paced. There is no fighting or action elements in this game. It was sometimes torture to explore. Things like doors and stairs have transitional animations (like Resident Evil), which get really old when you're lost. Even turning around takes time. All in all, if you're under 35 - I'd say give this one a miss. If you're over 35 and remember when the PS1 came out - you should consider getting it. It'll take you back. Three Star Game + 1 For Nostalgia.

Bad then, worse now
There was a very, very brief window of time in the mid 90s (late '94-'96) where game graphics hit this weird phase. Everyone was burned out on the early 90s FMV fad, but home gaming technology wasn't quite ready to give us first gen 3D yet. To fill the void, games started giving us some very bad pre rendered CGI where every character looked like a blow up doll modeled in Poser. D was one such game (Take 2 would also release a bunch of adventure games with the same look). You're basically playing a very, very bad version of The 7th Guest with that graphic style instead of FMV. 80% of your time will be spent watching the extremely slow, unskippable walking and turning animation between screens. The few puzzles there aren't clever, just tedious. The elevator section is one of the most frustrating and tedious adventure puzzles I've ever suffered through (only the maze from 2016's Obduction matches it). Oh yeah, you're also on a 2 hour timer and it's game over if you don't beat it in time. Who thought this was fun? The ending is so abrupt and stupid that I honestly laughed out loud. Imagine if The Exorcist ended with Darth Vader popping up to proclaim "I am your father!". It is THAT dumb. Like another review said, there were half a dozen infinitely better adventure games to come out the same year as this. Only pick up if you enjoy morbid curiosity as a gaming historian, delving into an and embarrassing graphical period of gaming.

Klimatyczna gra. Trzyma w lekkim napieciu. Jedyny minus to ten ze trzeba ja przejsc od razu. Ma sie na to 2 godziny.
