A big thank you to GOG and Crytek for this excellent release.
Remasters of classic games that have long been among the most technically advanced in the world. I'm very happy to finally see them preserved on GOG.
It's nice that GOG finally brought Crysis 2 and 3 to their platform, but it isn't the versions I've personally wanted (and is a strange move, considering that GOG has a very preservation friendly stance, yet they didn't gave us the original releases of C2 and C3).
Crysis 1 has some major downgrades in physics compared to the original PC version due to the fact that this remaster was based on Xbox 360 version. It also still runs like dogwater, since Crytek still haven't implemented multi-core support, therefore it's still a very CPU limited game. Yet the biggest problem of this version is lack of respect towards the original artistic intention. Totally different color palette, different lighting and omittion of certain (typical for the games of that era) effects make this version a no-go (also, no Warhead campaign and multiplayer mode).
Crysis 2 is a better one, but not by a lot, since most of the improvements compared to the first game stem from the fact, that it already supported many CPU cores in it's original version and also was a console centric game, so no major downgrades compared to the OG PC release (maybe with an exception of less pronounced tessellation on the environment). Still, it's plagued with the same lack of care for the original artistic intention as the remaster of it's predecessor (also, no multiplayer mode).
Crysis 3 is the only good one in my opinion. It doesn't have any major downgrades in comparison to the previous releases and boasts actual improvements over the original PC/console releases of the game. I'm also happy to report that the atmosphere was left intact in this remaster and even improved with the inclusion of ray-tracing, that fits this game like a glove (multiplayer mode wasn't brought back, sadly).
Overall, it's not a good collection of remasters and I'd recommend playing though the original C1 (can be bough on GOG along with it's standalone expansion) and C2 (Steam, Microsoft Store and EA App only) instead of the remastered releases. I can, however, recommend C3 Remastered, since this one is pretty good.
Remastered version without the Warhead at the package? Also Crysis 1 remake is worst than the org. one due to the lack of multi-core supports. It is much worst, and also smothness is better with better grapihic over the not remastered C1. C2 and C3 is ok.
Really looking forward to future yearly GOG anniversary releases now! Another great year of important game releases/preservation from GOG. Like many games I'll double-dip as they release on GOG, it is by far my preferred platform for reasons which are becoming more and more obvious for everyone - 'own' what you buy, don't rent it!
About the Games:
Renowned as a technical breakthrough in computer graphics at the time (and serving as a benchmark for your machine to test it's performance!) -all x3 of these games are very solid shooters - with iterative differences between them.
I have not played these remasters at the time of writing but have played the originals. Assuming that the original game play has been faithfully preserved -and with EVEN better graphics on display here - then then they are a brilliant pickup especially on discount. All deserve to be preserved.
The series has a logical progression -the first game is effectively more of a sandbox -with the second game sitting between it and the third game which has tighter levels/scenarios. The 3rd game is more intense/shorter than the previous two. All games are re-playable adding some value because of the different stealth suite /approaches / weapons you can use.
I can't comment on multiplayer since I didn't play that - nor the mods that have emerged since, but a quick search shows that mods are available for these newer remasters as well -if interested, search for Crysis remaster on the nexus mods web site.
If you are considering moving to Linux gaming:
Using GOG games through Heroic Games launcher will even store your saves in the GOG cloud using windows games...
Check out ProtonDB to see if your games will run on Linux before buying (increasingly, most will nowadays -so long as they don't contain DRM or incompatible/invasive anti-cheat code.
I'm happy to confirm that all three of these Crysis games run with at least Gold/Platinum compatibility on Linux.
This is a perfect addition to GOG's FPS library. Well done to the GOG team! To me, this is the best addition since The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim surprised us here.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
