The story: The epic journey of a clone
After 700 years of peace and prosperity, the Galactic Empire has suddenly been shattered into pieces. The OMNIs, god-like machines which did everything for their human masters, have mysteriously shut down. And humankind, having long since lost the ability to survive on its own, is dangerously close to extinction. But somewhere in a far corner of the Galaxy is Gehenna, a planet of ice and rock and a top-secret facility that is the pinnacle of Imperial Tech and also humanity’s last chance.
You are a clone of Admiral Ellys Idaho, a weapon fashioned from flesh, the best Imperial Admiral ever to battle in the stars and you have just been awoken on this planet by its strange and darkly-humorous Guardian, Kaliban, the last functional OMNI to exist.
Your mission: skillfully command a battleship through the Empire's now chaotic, violent clusters ––where one wrong move could be your last–– as you try to reactivate the OMNIs and save the future of all humankind. But you must leave Gehenna now.... for time has almost run out.
Platforms
Crying Suns will be available at first on PC and Mac. We also planned to release the game on iPad soon after the desktop version.
Please DO NOT kill demos!
Game is excellent and demo is absolutely needed for testing by those who don't run windows!
Gog installer messed up on wine but i managed to copy over installed demo and it runs under wine fine!
Game vise its one of the best rogue-like ones I've seen over the years!
Audio is perfect! Music ambience 5/5!
Story is refreshing over "shot that millitary guy there into face, wait until raspberry jam fades" games.
Id wish there were either more stops in chapters or the alert would proceed slower for more exploration.
Thanks for something good devs!
This review is based solely on the free demo, played for 12 hours during 3 different sessions. Initially, I thought the game had plenty of potential; however, the longer I played the more I realized it relies too much on luck and randomness - not enough on strategy.
The game is extremely linear, literally forcing you to proceed along certain lines with little ability to deviate. Resources tend to be limited and replacing them sufficiently, even on the "easy" setting, is difficult. At the start of the game you select two officers. These officers are critical for some of the random encounters and away missions. If you do not have an officer with the proper talents some of the random encounters cannot be completed and the away missions for resupply will be unsuccessful. You have little control on any of these outcomes; it simply comes down to luck. Do your officers have the correct talent? You may be able to add officers as the game progresses thus increasing your odds, but still too much luck is involved.
I was tempted to buy the full version until my last encounter, taking on some possibly infected colonists to supplement our commandos. The first report was that their integration had been successful. However, this was quickly changed to the colonists were, indeed, infected, and that half of my commandos had been lost (6 of 12). All random. I found on "easy" mode about 75% of outcomes were negative; I can only imagine what "hard" mode is like!
The demo is free; can't hurt to try it for yourself to see what you think. Cost you several hours of game play, I guess. There are no instructions or save mode, but the learning curve isn't too steep and the game play is relatively simplistic. More reading than action, but that was not an issue. As a former Air Force officer, I actually thought much of the Admiral and crews' dialogue was well done. It's just that you, the player, while making limited choices have little control over outcomes. Too much reliance on luck.
This demo is really immersive with a lot of reading to tell you the basis of the universe. So you need to take your time a let the game tell you his story. It's an FTL like with some pixel art graphics and 3D style combats. A lot of information to take in so i was a little lost at the beginning.
I really recommand you play it before you buy the game, because it's a good introduction, and if you don't like it, just dont buy it. For my part, i'm conviced !
Thanks to the developers for providing a demo.
However, I'd suggest that anyone sufficiently in doubt about taking the time to try it to be reading reviews can safely skip it. Halcyon 6 is another game along these lines; I didn't particularly like that one (and didn't make it very far, maybe I'd change my mind if I did) but it at least is a more coherent game (unfortunately no demo for that one and I can't recommend it but it still seems better than this one).
You apparently have a research department on your ship, however if you don't happen to have the amount of scrap they want to do something when they happen to ask for it you don't get another chance (for the duration of the demo at least).
The combat system isn't completely horrible but not really interesting either.
There should be autopause options.
The story is just random, incoherent misery.
