The good, the bad and the buggy
Control is a great game storywise and even though the gameplay can get somewhat repetitive, the only real bugbear I have is the crash you get in the Seize ability side mission. I fixed it by running as admin, in borderless and with SSAO and AA off in DX11 mode. Still good game, great story, but somewhat lacking on technical polish.

Great experience, hampered by a glitch..
Long story short I got about 14 hours into the game when I encountered the Anchor boss fight... There is a good chance you will encounter a hard crash to desktop at an exact moment at the start of this fight. This is a well documented issue that has never been fixed by the developer. Tried lots of different fixes that people have suggested and none worked. Turns out, there is an option in the menu to turn on one-hit kills. I ain't proud of it but I used it to get past this boss so I can continue the game. I'm all for cheats, if that's your thing. But the fact this is hard coded into the menu, to me, shows this is simply the taint of developer laziness that permeates the industry nowadays. As a father of 6 I don't have the time I used to have to enjoy gaming. And my lord, how annoying is it that every other game these days requires so much troubleshooting and tinkering to make them work properly. Beyond this glitch, I'm enjoying the game immensely. But my respect for this developer has unfortunately fallen :(

Interesting but boring to get there
As many others have stated, it's a Remedy game. The shooting and movement mechanics is like any other game. Pretty boring in my opinion. You have very little reason or background to where and why you are doing things and have to find small pieces of the puzzle as you go. For some games, this can be generally intriguing and truly immerse you into the game. Control just feels annoying and boring. The enemies, the shaodw versions are extremly boring and trite. Combat is by far the biggest let down and why I coulnd't muster any more energy to continue this game. Same thing with FEAR, the remake. I just don't like this type of combat. If you - you may be in for a treat. The setting and the suroundings is nice and I wish I could just click a button to skip the combat all together to find out the story behind the game. Alas, i can not and may have to reinstall one day and try it out again. Doesn't eel 100% optimized and can be a bit sluggish. In this case, look for online guides to help you set up the settings to make it as playable as possible.

Remedy: Iteration Perfected
Control is a remedy developed third person shooter, a genre easily considered to be their bread and butter. I’m guessing many of you reading this already know the history of Remedy Entertainment, that being Max Payne, Alan Wake, Quantum Break. If you’ve dipped your toes in before, you may know remedy has a distinct feel to their games. But, with Remedy, every game comes with iteration, but that iteration comes with great leaps forward. Control feels like that, lessons learned from games before, an attempt to compile aspects of every other property they have touched over the past 20 years and distill them into something cohesive and interesting. Not to be too cliché, but I believe this to be a cornerstone as to why Remedy has garnered such goodwill with their general audience. They don’t make games to simply make money, they make them because they want to make something better, something artistically fulfilling, something good. The gameplay, to put it simply, is mostly good. The game isn’t insanely long, but it’s not short either. Expect 15-30 hours, depending on how much you enjoy the side activities. As you reach the end the combat starts to become slightly repetitive. I’ve now played this game twice and both times had a similar fatigue towards this point/the end. My recommendation, to stretch this out, is to experiment with other weapon types and powers. Despite all these caveats, the combat is fun and fluid when it clicks. But it’s the story, the visuals, the presentation, that keeps me loving this game and pushing through even when the fatigue sets in. This may be the best way to introduce yourself to remedy’s games, it’s certainly one of the most digestible for modern times. Give it a go and TAKE CONTROL. Game Review a day 3/500+
