Combat Mission: Afrika Korps

Combat Mission: Afrika Korps is a great game, and I bought it for $40 together with Barbarossa to Berlin from the battlefront store when it was still up and I consider it money well spent. I got the GoG versions as well for posterity. However, the GoG release is the 1.03 version and does not have patch 1.04. On my laptop, the 1.03 version runs fine, but on my desktop it runs at a garbage frame rate. Replacing ddraw.dll as suggested on the Battlefront forums doesn't fix it. I tested it before writing this review and I get a solid 60 FPS with patch 1.04 but in the 20s or teens on 1.03. Apparently nvidia cards are primarily affected. Otherwise, this is a great game. There are literally thousands of scenarios to download. CM:AK is my favorite out of all the CMx1 games, with the most varied armies and environments. I'd definitely recommend picking up it and CM:BB now that they're on GoG. Definitely 5 stars with patch 1.04, please update it Battlefront - thanks!

I have Windows 10 on my PC and the GOG version of CMAK ran right away without difficulty. If you are on the fence about this version, do not hesitate any further- I am glad I purchased these games from GOG as I can play all the Combat Mission games again like they were new. If you have never played the Combat Series before, do not be put off by the blocky graphics. This has remained my favorite WWII game for 15 years now. The AI is solid and remains decently challenging and the random map generator gives you unlimited new battles to fight. The graphics can also be easily modded (sp?) so you can update that as you wish. All in all, a CMAK is the best game in a great series.

I remember this game as being the most polished and advanced of all 3 original Combat Mission games. Unfortunately on GOG there's a bug that forces you to wait whole turn - if you try to skip it or pause, it blocks "done" button from appearing. Also the game freezes once you use quick battle and let the computer select unit automatically. These two bugs fortunately does not appear on Barbarossa to Berlin and Beyond Overlord.

These games are still the best close combat sims

A great game, realistic and fun to play. The WEGO game engine provides a challenging and realastic enviroment as compared to RT play. Great graphics and historical vehicles etc. A must for WW2 gamers who enjoy realistic game play.
