Hate it

Lately I've become used to "RPG" games where it doesn't really matter what I do. This is the first time in quite a while that playing a RPG I feel like I have to watch my step carefully and think carefully about what to do and how to do it and for me that is the true essence of the RPG genere. This game, true to a dystopic setting, has no good choices to pick from and I hate it. Or maybe I just hate myself for having to make those choices even when I know that I'm just choosing one evil over another. In any case this is the first game in a while that really scratched my RPG itch and for that alone it deserves a 4. I give it 5 because for me, as someone with a full time job and a life outside of gaming, a fast travel system that says "don't worry I will not waste your time" is a very welcome feature. I don't mind sinking time in a game as long as I'm having fun but wasting 10 minutes going from point A to point B is not my idea of fun, regardless of hoy much effort was put in the visual design. RPGs often suffer from this so I'm very happy with this game in that regard.

Flying High

I picked up Colony Ship when it first came out. Since that time there has been several updates. What was once flawed gem, has become a precious jewel. If you liked AOD or Dungeon Rats, then Colony Ship won't disappoint you. At first the game was insanely hard; some encounters would take many reruns. I am an ancient gamer, late 70's, hence the name Oldgrizz. There's an old saying if you don't succeed, try, try again. The latest update has two modes of play Hero, which makes a once difficult game a lot easier to play. But you can still die. The other mode is Underdog, which is the opposite of Hero. There are also multiple ways to solve certain situations, some change the course of the game. Looking forward to the next update.

A CRPG masterpiece

After I've finished Age of Decadence (same studio), I was worried that there won't be any other game that ever gives me as much freedom of decision as Fallout 1 and 2 did in the past. It's so hard to find an RPG that gives you hard choices and with consequences far in the future, so there is no other way than to live with the choices you have made. Colony Ship is a true work of love - the quests, the graphics, the combat, the implants, gadgets, armor weapons - everything is amazingly well-designed and implemented into a world, which you learn about along with your hero, who has spent his whole life stuck in a huge hangar bay. If you enjoy CRPGs, do yourself a favor, buy this game today - it will provide you with hundreds of hours of gameplay. :)

Good, but..

People are mistakenly used to the notion of grandiosity and dark grimness being innately conjoined. No such thing. It is not that grim when you're participating in the rupture of a universe and consorting with gods. It is not dark when you share a bad fate with trillions of other people. In Colony Ship, you are one of thousands of survivors each of whom seems determined to diminish that already scarce supply down to hundreds. Your entire world is a dilapidated junkyard, only a miracle keeps it habitable. And surrounding it is a void of space, which is even less habitable than the ship (as voids tend to be). Onto the details: The Good: - Audiovisuals - looks and sounds very good, really immerses you in the tiny, sad world. - Story - it's a good story. - Writing - it's good. The but: - Deja vu - if you liked Age of Decadence, you'll like this one but for both of these games the originality is it's strongest advantage. Colony Ship is still original compared to the market but much less so when compared to AoD. - Rails and roads - outside of combat sequences the game is pretty much just a graphical version of a CYOA book. There's no randomness whatsoever. Every element was placed there by hand, nothing is simulated or generated. The combat sequences themselves can either be won or avoided (if you lose you load back and either try to win or take a different road and avoid it).

Modern day Classic for CRPG Fans

Iron Tower Studios create very niche games for a very niche audience, so I will try to be as careful as possible with my recommendation: If you're a fan of old-style CRPGs, such as the original Fallout and its sequel, you will enjoy this game. If you played Baldur's Gate 3 and wanted a smaller game that focused more on the RPG systems and less on the 'fluff', you will enjoy this game. If you enjoy tactical games, such as XCOM, and want a more narrative experience attached to your campaign, you will enjoy this game. If you have little to no experience with any of these kinds of game, tread carefully. I can honestly say that, even having played all of these games, and Iron Tower's previous titles, it took me around 100 hours over several months to master the game's systems. You will likely be frustrated with this game, but if you're willing to work through it, the experience can be incredibly rewarding.
