Imperfect step in the right direction
The game gets back to visual style of the first two games from the series, although with 3D characters mimicking 2D. The graphics looks very well, except the locations being very static - no passerby, bo birds, no clouds or leaves moving on the wind. The game is split up in 2 episodes and you could've thought these are two different games sometimes. The first part is more murder story and investigation, with fairly logical and simple puzzles. The second part is more like traditional Broken Sword game you're deciphering ancient documents, opening old crypts and secret passages and traveling to more exotic locations than Paris and London. The puzzles also get more interesting and demanding here. And yes, puzzles are usually good. I especially enjoyed decoding the painting to find places on the Catalonia map, deciphering the telegram and the puzzle with light colors. Tabula Veritas decoding isn't that good. Some symbols are pretty obvious from provided clues, others are fairly obscure. And I didn't like music puzzle. I'm really tone deaf and musical notation clue isn't too helpful here. Fortunately the game has very good multi stage help system so it wasn't too bad. But who in their sound mind would've thought that to fix a broken console with dangerous live wires, you need to stick a paperclip to a cockroach with a strawberry jam? How stupid it is? Story-wise, it's standard for the series ancient artifacts, centuries old conspiracies and secrets, some bad guys who want to destroy/control the world with arcane powers. It would be nice if this mysterious, ancient power turned out to by just a myth for once. And in the beginning of the game, we 're being told that George gas been in Paris for several months already but didn't even try calling Nico to say hi and catch up. Strange.
