More than two years have passed since the infamous 1.3 patch was announced. And it's still not here.
The devs are silent about Bombshell (or even ignore it) and there is still no any official statement about the state of this project. Yeah, the game is playable and actually not bad at all, but definitely doesn't worth a full price in it's current condition.
I really hope that Ion Maiden will not repeat Bombshell's destiny and wouldn't be abandoned because of any oher upcoming project.
There's a good game in here, but the levels are so large the game becomes a long, boring grind - worse if you try to complete side-quests. Generally high production values, but could have been so much better. And why is it played from an isometric viewpoint? Seems like it would be more visceral as a first or third person shooter. Which is the direction the devs are going with the follow-up game, Ion Maiden. Looking forward to that one. But this one is just meh.
Ditto to what the others say about it being a buggy mess. I thought I was doing something wrong until I watched a youtube video and found out that the game had failed to trigger an event that left me trapped in the same area indefinitely. Made worse by the auto-save that doesn't let me go back to a previous save. So the only option was to start over from scratch. Not worth it for this game, it's not that fun. I can't believe the publisher's thought this was worth 35 bucks. 10...maybe. Probably still return it anyway.
Game has some pretty good graphics and was not too resource heavy on my system. Love the atmosphere and aeshetics of the game. The voice acting is hit and miss. General and Heskel are pretty good. Shelly is mediocre due to being very unemotional and flat toned. Troops sound like a recording of an online voice chat and clues me into the fact that this was a rushed game.
The weapons seem pretty good at first but they drop off in usefulness pretty quickly as the game goes on. I ended up using the Ion Maiden as my main weapon going down the rail gun patch. It has infite ammo and I could get about 3-5 shots to kill a boss very easily. It one shots most enemies and goes through them, but you need to be able to see them first. This bring us to the next problem...
As soon as the enemies come on screen, they attack you. You can shoot them before you see them, but you have to know they are there and very rarely will you be able to do that. Some enemies kill Shelly very easily and because of the camera angle, you could be walking right into death. This really ruins the isometric angle for me.
Best thing about the game is the soundtrack. It is very well done with great atmosphere and some good metal mixed in there. Andrew Hulshult is a good composer and I feel like this game does not do his score justice. Game is worth the buy for the soundtrack, if it is on sale. For that reason alone, I do not regret buying this game.
Story is also very lame and I got bored with this game very fast, right until I got to they icy planet. Design of the world was marvelous and the music with it was really good. Everything else was mediocre and then I got bored again.
If you need an interactive, over the top music video with a lame script and boringly cheesy humor, then this game is for you.
Overall this game is not worth buying for full price, when on sale for less than $10 it is worth the buy for the soundtrack alone. I give it 3 stars fora good beginning, soundtrack, and atmosphere.
I'll try to articulate why I love it, but it still may not convince you. I've been playing games since I was 5 (currently 36). I've played all manner of genres and styles. In the last 10 years or so......I felt a real disconnect from the AAA game industry with a few exceptions (after all, they're not all bad). I'm tired of being milked for money by DLC and micro transactions. I'm tired of annual releases that make tweaks every year and charge full price. And most importantly, I'm tired of the same thing shoved in my face. This game is not perfect by a long shot. I bought it on sale about a year after its inital release and it still has a few bugs (my PC didn't like playing it in DX11). But it is a simple shooter with upgradeable, RPG elements that really is just enough for me to recommend this to someone who likes to take 15 minute stretches on a game. It looks great, and plays simple enough, and that's all I need. I know I'm in the minority in loving it, but it really does remind me of old school PC games, and that's what I believe they were trying to achieve, and that's what I got.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
