Has pros and cons

Pros: Interesting story - starts out kind of lame and then gets good Doesn't use up a lot of computer resources and need a video card with, like, 25G Great backgrounds; you get to travel and stay inside Cons: Really annoying characters. I have been amusing myself by talking back to the monitor. For instance - Darren, in his broad Bostonian accent: What is that round thing up theah? It has a large hand & one that is small. Me: I don't know, Darren, perhaps it might be a clock? Frustratingly linear at times. If you don't specifically make Darren look at an object by clicking on it and suffering through the inanity that follows, you might end up not being able to progress later on in the game. All in all, Darren does act like someone barely into his 20s. Occasionally he is brilliant, displays his education, and MacGuyvers his way out of hairy situations. Other times, he is rather stupid. This game does help to pass the time while I stay indoors as much as possible during the COVID pandemic.

Black MIrrorer

The arguably first game by Kingart (The Book of Unwritten Tales, The Raven: Legacy of a Master Thief) already shows how solidly they design the adventure games. Though not as moody as the irregular first part, it depends on it to tell a story of a foreigner that gets involved in the gothic saga of that family. Play the first Black Mirror, with a walkthrough if you want, and then move to this one and wonder about the improvements in humour, puzzle design, narration, and enjoy the several pop culture nods (horror movies and other things) that the game has in spades. One of my favourite adventures of the later years.

Nostalgia

I just finished replaying this game after a long, long time and I'm ready to write a review about it, no spoilers. Strangely enough my first Black Mirror was BM 2, I got so interested in the story I bought 1 and 3 after it, so BM 2 introduced me to this game series. Specifically about Black Mirror 2 now, compared to Black Mirror 1 the graphics, voice acting, variety of soundtracks and the technical side overall has improved. Also, neither of the 3 games need a monster PC to run, I consider it a big plus because I never had one. They have also added an option to highlight every interactive object on the screen, you don't have that in BM 1, so the second game might be just a little bit easier (but it's not easy, no). I couldn't do the piano puzzle because I have zero competence in music, otherwise I can't say any of the puzzles are technically undoable, there is some logic in all of them (I had to search for help 2 times even though I had finished the game already 7-8 years ago). Main character knows a lot about physics and chemistry, so I find the parts when you need to improvise and invent something very interesting, he's not a random dumb guy in his 20s. Special mention to Biddeford, the starting location. It's very well made, everything about it. I would've given 5 stars even if the game ended there and had a different name. Lastly, on Black Mirror 1 thread I saw many people complained about the pace and difficulty of it. Folks, when you enter a new location just once, from that moment on you need to double-click the location and you spawn there immediately, without having to watch how the character walks. Map is also very helpful and spawns the character where you want immediately, you just need to "manually" enter a new location for first time. If you find BM 1 too difficult you can start with BM 2, if you get interested in the story than you'll play BM 1 as a prequel, just don't give up.

An amazing sequel

The second game in The BM collection feels really different from the first game esp in the first half. The game starts really slow and very differently but do not worry - by the end of chapter 2 you will be asking yourself what is going on ! The story of the second game is probably the main point and it gets better with every chapter. I don't recommend playing this before the BM1. The connection between the 2 games that you eventually will find out is what makes the story so good. And there were so many unexpected events that you won't even think about that may happen - I just loved it ! The puzzles were weaker in general compared to the first game - early on there were very few and also easy. That is until later into the game where there were some extremely good ones On a technical level the game is way better than the first - you can quick save/load, you can fast travel, you can see all the active points you can interact with with space, there is auto saving if your are about to die and the best one - you can pick up all the items right away the first time you see them. There is no longer "you cannot pick this until you need it" ! I also played on the recommended /lower/ resolution and it was really great compared to the 1080p one !

A good game bogged down by a weak story.

After 2 chapters I've got very annoyed by the main protagonist (i.e. Darren). I really wished somebody checked the script beforehand and made Darren a bit more likeable person. I can't believe that somebody with a crush on another person would be convinced of somebody's innocence without knowing her at all. And the way he was carrying on about it was very annoying. This story has Eastern Europe written all over it. Surely they could find a better motive for trying to help the wrongly accused. Again, I'm not pleased with some game mechanics, because I'm not sure if the items I'm looking at are important or not. What is this obsession with red herrings that don't contribute to the game story whatsoever? At least they got rid of pixel hunting that marred the first game and introduce the automatic save, although saving game manually is still recommended in sticky situations.
