With a world that is over five times larger than Shadowgate, Beyond Shadowgate captures the same look and feel as the 8-bit console version while including modern design sensibilities. Since the memory and color palette limitations are removed, Beyond Shadowgate is a much longer and vibrant game, with both retro and modern gameplay mechanics that give you the feel of the original! For players accustomed to the NES 8-bit version, the game features XInput controller support. The adventure is also completely playable by mouse and key binds.

Story
35 years have passed since Jair defeated the Warlock Lord in the caverns beneath the living castle, Shadowgate. In that time, the land of Kal Torlin prospered and the events of Shadowgate were forgotten. But once again evil is stirring, scheming to bring the world to ruin.
In the dungeons of Gwynenthell, the capital city of Kal Torlin, a lowly Fenling by the name of Del Thornburrow awaits his fate. No stranger to a jail cell, Del soon frees himself from the dangers of the dungeon, only to begin a journey that will push him to the edge of his limits.
Lead Del as he travels through Gwynenthell, across the Torlin Forest, over the Gatekeeper Mountains, and beyond! Uncover plots to overthrow kingdoms that threaten to plunge the land into darkness! Interact with old friends and new, while protecting Del from the traps, hazards, monsters, and every other peril that may introduce him to the ever-present Grim Reaper.

Autosave failure
I got so used to dying and continuing that I did not save for half the game, and therefore, making a mistake in the end, i saw the bad ending, and to see another, I would have to replay half the game. SAVE, fools, SAVE!

A FANTASTIC example of a great sequel
When people look for a sequel they generally want something bigger, grander, and better then the original, but still keeping the feel that game had. That is exactly what Beyond Shadogate achieves, tweaking the mechanics of the turn based game just enough to be fresh, improving the look just enough to look much nicer while still feeling like it would belong in the NES library along side it's older brother... in fact this "the same but better" could be said about just about every aspect of this game. The only thing I have to knock it at all for is this time felt a lot more linear then the original game did, but I expect that is more the price of the scope the game has of an adventure across the lands instead of residing within a single castle and the need to keep the player somewhat on target while doing so. Overall this was just a fantastic title.

A Worthy Sequel
If you played and loved the original Shadowgate, you will greatly enjoy this game. There are callbacks to Uninvited and Deja Vu in this game that can feel a bit distracting, but the lore and puzzles, as well as revisiting the actual castle, make the game great and worthy of your time.

Best in-class sequel to an all-time game
Beyond Shadowgate carries an entire generation fo adventure gaming on its shoulders, and successfully inherits the legacy of the entire point and click genre, serving as a true sequel to one of the best adventure games ever made while finding appropriate moments to pay homage to Uninvited and Deja Vu as well. This is up there with the first two Monkey Island games and Maniac Mansion + Day of the Tentacle as the finest point-and-click game ever made. I cannot recommend this one enough to folks with even the smallest curiosity about the genre.
